He was probably more influential than famous. If you are not a fan of Lou Reed, you are certainly a fan of a musician who is a fan of Lou Reed.
Journalist Lester Bangs had a legendary love-hate relationship with Lou which hit an antagonistic, fascinating low point in the article "Let Us Now Praise Famous Death Dwarves (or how I slugged it out with Lou Reed and stayed awake)." It's available in a book of Lester's writing. I don't think it's available online.
I still remember wandering around a store in the late 70s (or possibly early 80s) finding hundreds of copies of Metal Machine Music dumped in some back corner. It was probably harder to sell than nuclear waste.

I always thought you were a bit overrated, and your latter-day, ambitious stuff brought your oft-times stilted lyrics to full bloom... but there are quite a few songs of yours which I love (Perfect Day and Walk on the Wild Side are not among them), and I will remember your New York album and of course Velvet Underground until I kick the bucket myself.

Strange day..and yes "Songs for Drella" is a great album, I bought it original, in tape many years ago.

Not really my cup of tea. That Lou-tallica, Meh-tallica stuff was quite embarrassing.
I never really got over Philip Lynott's (Thin Lizzy) sudden demise so if you were a fan of Lou Lou I can certainly relate. There's no denying, he was a Leg-End (Legend?) of our times.

Lou has been dead for years. He was more of a lifestyle influence as opposed to musical.
