You are right, but the fact is when you put I, IV, V in pretty much any order you pretty much get something that works. Occasionally you throw another chord in the mix, but that's how pop-music has been built ever since .. well .. around 1600s or so. That's a thing: V is dominant and IV is sub-dominant and these are the chords of power (not to be confused with powerchords).

But it's not about whether or not V,IV,I or VI,V,I or whatever such simple thing is boring. Sure they are boring, nobody's questioning that. But while boring, they also create a strong, meaningful (in some abstract sense) progressions that are easy for the listener to understand.. because well, it just feels right (in a more scientific sense these are also built on intervals of simple ratios, so there are strong consonances, which is probably want makes it easy for the brain to deal with them).

Note that even with two or three chords, you can still vary how the individual notes are arranged (order, spacing, etc), which can add colorful flavor... so it's not nearly as limiting as it initially appears.

You can go more complex too, but it becomes somewhat harder for both the composer and the listener: you have to work out a more complex puzzle to build a meaningful progression into something where it's not obvious, and the listener has to pay a bit more attention to figure out what's going on (not really, but your brain does focus a bit more on it). In some sense you fool the listener into believing you are doing the "wrong" thing (creating tension as things don't go as expected) and then when you properly tie it together into a release you essentially say "see I was just messing with you." It's sort of like magicians sometimes make you think they failed.

Apparently not everyone likes their music challenging to listen though, so your audience will be smaller and they will be more demanding too. They are paying more attention, they want more complexity to keep them interested, yet it still needs to be meaningful or it becomes noise. So if you don't tie it together properly, the effect will be like a magician accidentally revealing what he was trying to do; unless it's funny in some way, it's probably not very entertaining at all. So trying to do things the hard-way has no value, unless you can pull it off properly.

But back to the topic of simple: I think it's the layering of meaningful progression in chords, melodies, phrases, rhythms, etc... and often interplay of the layers that makes it all "click" into something that sounds "good" even if ultimately it's all pretty damn boring.

That said, I've yet to write a chart-topper, so take my thoughts for what they are worth: as incoherent thoughts of someone who does some music for fun as a hobby.
so what you think about this guy?
Typical pop garbage... but that doesn't mean it doesn't do the "pop garbage" stuff correctly. :)

Also, I wanna add that I'm talking about chords mostly because .. well chords happen to be my passion.. but I think it all applies equally to every other element as well: you here a lot of simple rhythms, with similar simple hooks since .. well some of it's from the 1600s again (well probably earlier, but I think western music theory starts getting anywhere around that period) and yet when it interplays correctly with the rest of it, it doesn't sound (that) boring.

maybe go to youtube and search on 'tomorrowland 2013' ... there you can find a lot of sets from different djs, and avidly study them while developing your own style.

THANKS YOU GUYS YOU ARE A LOVE ACTUALLY I DO WHAT YOU TOLD ME WITH CHORD PROGRESSION CERTAINLY IM MISSING SOMETHING.maybe it is the sound choise no?

Post

I forget avicii revealed that all melodie he does are repetitive one bar or whatever but they sound good , there is a movement there actually cause the arrangement is well done.think have a seriouse problem with two things:
1-making catchy melody which means which melodic interval I have to choose to express an idea and the rythm of the melody, just cant figure out a catchy rythmic and very attractif melody
2-how arrange so the 1 bar will not sound boring cause after all even if I take the same sounds as him same melody i can do a bar but after this as a friend here explain us therer is no high and low in my arrangement.

Post

Usually people write a lot more than one bar before they start thinking about arrangements...

no no just one bar seriousely i saw the video man !!thats crazy never tought this possible but yes actually it is he did.

Yes, while eating a bag of chocolate chips.

Smartfusion, the lessons you have to learn are, imo, more about the cruel nature of art and society than they are about making better music.
Hopefully some of the posts in this thread have given you some insight there. :)

Pop culture shits on real art.
Dont listen to the real musicians.
'The kids' do not want to hear more chords.
One bar? No problem!

To my ear, you know what you are aiming for with your music, and you are not often far off, and you are wondering why no one notices.
Join the club. Its a lot like Fight Club...
"Hit me, as hard as you can." :hihi:

As was said previously though, your ratio of followers/plays/likes is really not bad at all. I think people do like your music.

ps, 'Flashback' is a jam. :)

From wikipedia:

In recent years, a subgenre of Uplifting Trance — dubbed "Orchestral Uplifting" or "Uplifting Trance with Symphonic Orchestra" and pioneered by Andy Blueman, SoundLift, Arctic Moon, Ralph Barendse, Farhad Mahdavi and others — has developed, wherein the timbres and instruments used in the track are those used in symphonic orchestras, including flutes, non-lyrical choral voices, violins, pianos, horns, orchestral drums, and others, and often includes even-longer-than-usual emotional orchestral breakdowns, while still preserving the other aspects of Uplifting Trance, therefore differing from the subgenre that was called "Orchestral Trance" a decade earlier. This new style has noticeably influenced the work of many artists outside the Uplifting scene, including the Black Pearl project of Ralph Fritsch and Roger Shah, who ordinarily identifies with Balearic Trance rather than Uplifting.

Maybe the kids are more open to new genres than you thought?

You could be the next one to create a new genre with more sophisticated melodies...
