This is speculation, but they were probably told to down tools until the situation was resolved. Oh, and there was probably a gagging clause as well.
They probably didn't know where their next pay cheque was coming from, if it makes you happy.
Silence on the forums for a year, and one update(?) for X2 instead of the usual three spells something odd in my book. And of course they had to release something. It is a business, and if I know coders they were putting in long hours to hit the deadline.
