Hello,
I'm looking for a budget mic (supercheap, or close). It will be used to record vocals, acoustic guitar, and percussion, initially. I have an old 8-buss desk under a bed somewhere (for mic pre's) so the mic can be a dynamic or a condenser.
I've narrowed it down to:
audix om-2 http://www.dv247.com/invt/19176
behringer b1 http://www.dv247.com/invt/2875
behringer b5 http://www.dv247.com/invt/18420
beyer mce 494 http://www.dv247.com/invt/8937
beyer tg-x58 http://www.dv247.com/invt/14252
studio electronics se1a http://www.dv247.com/invt/20218
samson c01 http://www.dv247.com/invt/3267
shure sm57 (plus boom & cable) http://www.dv247.com/invt/18654
shure sm58 http://www.dv247.com/invt/13248
studio projects b-1 http://www.dv247.com/invt/2859
t f pro tf27 http://www.dv247.com/invt/20162
I'm drawn towards the sm57 (because I've had good experiences with them, they're super-handy, and this one comes with boom & cable), the studio projects (because I've yet to read anything but good about them), and the tf pro tf27 (because I've never heard of it and, for the price, I'm intrigued).
Can anyone help me make my mind up?

Well, right off the bat I'd rule out the SM57 & SM58 if you want to record acoustic guitar. They're wonderful mics for electric guitar and vocals, but just awful for acoustic instruments...
Not to make your life more difficult, but here are a couple more to consider:
Marshal 1006 (large capsule condenser, great for vocals) - $100
Marshall 603s (small capsule condenser -- terrific acoustic guitar and percussion mic) $90
What's your budget? Another possibility is the Marshall two-pack.. you get a MXL2001 large cap and a 603s small cap for $140. The 2001 isn't quite as good as the 1006, but it's close...

here's what I'm probably gonna buy:

I've read a lot of praise about it - apparently it's
basically a Neumann design and it's hand-crafted

Thanks for the advice garret. I've heard good things about the MXL's, unfortunately the 1006 is listed at 115.15GBP (nearly $200?) and the 603s at 88.13GBP...garret wrote:Well, right off the bat I'd rule out the SM57 & SM58 if you want to record acoustic guitar. Ahh, it was the drum mics that were reviewed this year! But there's a review of the capacitor vocal mics which should give you an idea;

That's why I'm being ruthless with my budget - I'm trying not to slide into microphone lustjens wrote:now here we can agree againpough wrote:I'm always tempted to buy a bunch more cheap condensers to do my own tests! More mics! More! More!

being a musician and not getting into gear-lust -
isn't that a contradiction?
