Well, you have to adapt. Make sure you only make music for old people, they won't notice.Arglebargle wrote:High frequency hearing loss really worries me in regards to this lunatic hobby. A few months back I mentioned to my mom that the brakes in her car were squealing. This came as news to her; she couldn't hear it. The thought of putting out shitty mixes because I can't hear what's going on is kind of depressing.
So... I got my hearing (and eye-sight) tested.

Yup, I've had my ears syringed before by a doctor. Just squirts saline solution or something in there and catches the washout in a cup held under your ear... special cup with a scooped side for maximum comfort... hi-spec stuff that!
I've also used those chinese ear candles which suck the wax out your ears...pretty effective too, and fairly non intrusive or pressurised-water-powered! You just have to lie still on your side for a while and make sure you don't burn yourself!

We'll, once on a vacation my one ear was suddenly completely clogged, so I went to the drug store and they gave me some drops I had to put in my ear, keep it for ten minutes and then rinse it myself with warm water and the help of some pipettes thingy. I was glad I did that outside, it was a real mess and I am pretty sure people who saw me accidentally were traumatized in the process.
But it helped.
Earwax, squirt, washout - this thread is turning out great! Anyone got stories with pus coming out of his ears?

Also, don't swim in public pools without ear plugs and don't get into a lot of fist fights. I got a very bad ear infection from a public pool that is still bothering me a year later. When it acts up, my hearing is noticeably duller in that ear. Regarding fighting, I practice MMA and once got hit in the face so hard that it caused a bone to shift around my ear canal, which has somehow amplified my tinnitus.xalama qo wrote:And please, fellow KVR-ians, I urge you to take care of your eyes and ears. Take breaks from the computer screen, don't monitor too loud or too long. Use a limiter on the master buss, and all that.
Don't take your hearing for granted, it will deteriorate with time, particularly in the 4-6kHz range so crucial for speech and musical definition. You however can control the rate of that deterioration by being pro-actively sensible.
And finally, don't DJ! After 13 years of DJ'ing, the ear I monitored through has much worse tinnitus than my other ear.

So people with the highest risk of getting ear problems are swimming DJs who are fighting in public pools?Uncle E wrote:Also, don't swim in public pools without ear plugs and don't get into a lot of fist fights. Don't ask me how I got there, probably a trail of morbid fascination and things young innocents should never be exposed to. I suppose the quickest way to get your morbid fix would be to search for carbuncle on YT, then just follow the trail.
I'm trying hard to forget that trip... oh the horror!

Wow E, sounds like you're the poster-boy for this thread! Poor guy!Uncle E wrote: Also, don't swim in public pools without ear plugs and don't get into a lot of fist fights. Anyone want to knock up an "Uncle Sam Wants You" poster that says "Uncle E Says Don't!" ? Would be kinda cool, specially with a couple turntables and headphones round his neck! Hehe!
RE MMA and breaking/shifting bones... the ear-guy said the entire middle & inner ear structure is actually encased in your skull, in about a 2cm skull wall thickness around the ear. That kinda reminded me how pro Betacam video machines are so heavy because the head/reel mechanisms are anchored by a thick solid metal foundation for maximum stability for read/write accuracy.
I suppose the inner ear needs a very solid bone foundation/casing in order to transfer vibration accurately. Any undermining of the structural integrity would probably result in resonances due to sympathetic vibration, etc.
Any doctors here feel free to chime in... I'm just thinking out loud
