The sounds of FS1R are spectacular. It would be fantastic to be able to make those sounds with the NeoFM.Ingonator wrote:Hi,
○ Formant Synthesis
An enhanced formant oscillator with a sharp, bandlimited sound. This synthesis method, which can be difficult to handle, is suitable for modeling voices or natural instruments. If you load a sine wave into oscillator C it will sound similar to the format oscillators from the classic Yamaha FS1R.

During the Beta test i did not have enough time to submit a huge amount of presets (als due to the Puls e 2 Beta test + sound design) but i'll try to do more ASAP.
I had submitted 5 small demo tracks (eacch around 30 seconds) for the offial demo. Will post the single demos as soon as it is allowed (maybe all 5 in one MP3).
Especially the different synthesis methods (see prvious page) offer tons of options and with waveform import and a built-in additive editor there are even more options.
The biggest advantage of "NeoFM" (or "real" FM opposing to PM) seems to be that it works with any waveform instead of only a small selection like in other FM (or better PM) synths. Based on that a lack of complex operator routing like in other Fm synths does not really seem to be a serious issue. Several patches in those other FM synths are layers using two operators for one layer anyway. In the Synthesis modes there are also replications of the PM from the DX7 (and also a mix of NEoFm and the DX7) so you could also do "vintage" FM sounds.
Feedback for the Carrier (like in other FM synths) is also possible in Nemesis.

If I understand it correctly, Phase Modulation gets it's 'values' from the changes in momentum of a waveform, i.e. a wave constructed out of straight lines and one or two discontinuities is going to be a very poor modulation source. As opposed to real FM which uses the height of the wave at any one moment as the modulation generator.
That's why PM synths need or work better with sinus-based waveforms - they're constantly curving and hence changing their instantaneous momentum.

It's a calculus thing I guess, but think about driving a car in the shape of a wave.thecontrolcentre wrote:whoooshSendy wrote: ... they're constantly curving and hence changing their instantaneous momentum.
If you're a sawtooth, you'll point the car and drive it in a straight line forever. When you hit the left edge of the road, you wrap around to the right edge of the road.
If you're a square, you still drive in a straight line forever, but you teleport back and forth between sides of the road.
If you're a triangle, you make instantaneously sharp turns when you hit the side of the road, but otherwise are driving in straight lines.
If you're a sine, you're constantly adjusting the steering wheel and never driving in a straight line.
Phase distortion synthesis doesn't care where your car is so much as how the steering wheel is turned.
