I REALLY want BWS to be the holy grail of DAW's and have read these posts with great interest.

Thank you all beta testers for the time you have taken to investigate and make your posts and answers to the questions! :tu:

Still, while curious, I'm not reading what I need to be convinced I need to invest in yet another DAW, though, I am hopeful something will come along that does convince me.

I'm not a mangler or masher and don't play well enough so most everything I do is by drawing notes and automation and it seems BWS is not doing midi any better than what I already have. Please correct me if I am wrong.

I'm a Live user so it is doubtful a Live copy is going to persuade me. Way back when, BWS had touted the ability to implement per note expression and this is what inticed me the most. But now it seems this is a no go.

So, I remain hopeful and we shall see once it is released.

Happy Musiking!

Many years ago when I was very upset about a 3D job in an agency, I worked with a very nice guy from the US and in the evening when we had a beer he said after a while of me and a colleague venting our frustration: "Hey, we're doing multimedia. Nobody's dying. It's just pixels of different colours. No life or death decisions. Relax."

He then told a story about a friend of his who's working in an ambulance and often has to make life or death decisions. Who to care for first? Open first the front or backdoor? Take the helmet off and be able to ventilate the crashed motorcycle driver or better leave it on to prevent further damage to the spine...

Somehow that came to mind ;-)

Cheers,

Tom

Here my impressions:
YMMV :D

The included synths are a bit more of interest because of the note expression stuff since it is only available with included instruments.

Thanks for the report. It sounds like the included stuff is good enough to be useful!

sorry, but this makes the entire thing a joke. It is of no excuse that it is version"one".. who in there right mind would design a DAW handling audio this way from the outset these days, let alone a decade back? I am absolutely thrilled i am not beta testing now as i'd have an argument with them about it and stop testing anyway. That is such a basic fundamental... and bitwig brags about how revolutionary it is and how capable it is.. i am shocked i am the only one being so vocal about this so far.. it's simply nothing more than a toy as far as audio editing is concerned then. Maybe it's an ok midi compositional tool.. i use crossfades 100 times per song. I can absolutely not believe it does not allow overlapping and just cuts. That's crazy.
Clearly Bitwig should be put in prison for their heinous crimes. They are the greatest evil the world has ever seen.

It's a version 1 software. Of course there are going to be some limitations. The only thing shocking to me is the number of people who (all evidence to the contrary) expect an initial release to be everything at once.

The per note expression is already there...

I don't think BWS is the holy grail of DAWs and I have it in writing that they don't even want to be that. ;-)

I also think that people who are happy with what the DAW does they are already using have no reason to not just continue to be happy. :-)

I personally am definitely not out to convince anybody of anything.

Note expression is there for the internal instruments and over time I'm sure it will be extended to VST 3.5 Plugins (which are not supported yet) but so far, AFAIK only Steinberg has plugins which offer that, so BWS is not that far off the track. I'm sure it will take a while until the broader market embraces note expression.

"Epic Fail" has got to be one of the most overused/misused phrases in the internet.

Yeah... They really should've tried harder to please everybody and every workflow... Go ahead and push the release date 4 more years out but FFS make sure you can please literally everybody with it or don't bother releasing at all...

(automatic crossfades suck, I'd rather have control over what the fade sounds like, which is best done by putting audio on 2 tracks and making 2 fades... and apparently Bitwig agrees)

If it wasn't crossfades it would be something else, not with you Theo, but always something with somebody. :) It's a 1.0 and something is always missing in a 1.0 and no matter what that thing is somebody will say it should be there already, say the devs are stupid for not putting it there already, and angrily rant about it not being there.

It gets even more puzzling - and again, not you Theo, it just always happens - when the anger is coming from people who swear the thing they already use and love is the best thing ever.

I can fully understand people being somewhat puzzled about some development choices, some of the choices in PT 11 puzzled the heck out of me. :) What i never really understand is the angry ranting about it, why it matters so much... especially if you already have something that works well for you.

Post

I can sum that up, if anyone actually cares.

For the common daw'er, there are always things that you feel can be done better and you hope that the master coders will get it.

Also, let's be fair. People are really hoping for this isall/endall thing with bitwig. I know a couple of years ago I did right or wrong.

So if it's not an endall and you feel like you are missing something, then you are going to get some friction.

As to hate, I dunno, I think the the thread has been fairly pleasant and informative for some time.

Oh and there is the fact that people love to chit chat with opposing views......that won't ever change regardless of the players ;)

Not sure about anyone else, but I'm definitely leaving my previous hosts for bitwig.I knew this when I saw it for the 1st time, it just clicked, and had the features I want and support for the midi controller's I use without fighting for integration,it just works well with them. ymmv though, I love the idea of program changes and being able to map my controller with ease, wait it's already done for Nektar.
