That'd make sense, and to push a lite version with hardware works really well for most daw companies. Perfect fit for them, but maybe they will offer with other hardware makers as well, time will tell. All I know is I'm buying the full retail version as soon as it drops, been waiting for ages for this type of workflow.

Not the mostly fake ones in music stores, no.Ogopogo wrote:Does anybody care about list prices?
To me the "real" list price is the direct price. The list price of (for example) Cubase is $499 because that's what Steinberg sells it direct for. If you can buy it cheaper than that, it's a sale. Sweetwater "lists" it at $599 and also sells it at $499, but that's just kinda fake out marketing.
So the list price of Bitwig (other marketing nonsense aside) will be whatever they list it at in their own store, not the $100 Sweetwater will add to it and then cut to make it look like you're saving $100.

@Lawrence: Ah, gotcha.
@Vitamind: that's interesting. I went looking for where they said there would be one version, but I couldn't find it. Anyone?

I don't see why people trip over Bitwigs price. I already have $500 set aside for it. All you really have to do is set aside like 10 dollars a week (the price of a dime bag) and you'd have the money in a year without any noticeable sacrifices.
Ive only known about BW for a little over a year but I understand it was announced way before that . As long as its been "coming soon" If I had been saving the whole time, I could have got one for my self and one for one of you "99 dollars please" guys.
I'm not trying to be snarkey, it just seems to me that BW has been "coming soon" long enough for price to be a nonissue.

That may be true.Ogopogo wrote:^Well that's assuming that you've been set on buying Bitwig since the annoucement. It's not as simple as that. There are other options for most.
At least for me, as a musician, that's how I feed my gear habit by budgeting my self. For example, if Bitwig hypothetically sucks, I'll just buy push or Omnisphere or a PS4 with that money.
YMMV but My experience has been that you just cant go wrong with saving for stuff. This also helps me avoid paying interest unnecessarily.

Ableton says they have around 150 people working on it, plus it need to make big money for the shareholders. Probably more people to care for everyday stuff (cleanning and such)Ogopogo wrote:They are a smaller company than ableton, right? So maybe they could get away with pricing it lower than the standard ableton version.
If it was around 700 I really don't know if I can swing that even though I'm so psyched for it.
https://www.ableton.com/en/jobs/
On the other hand Bitwig lists 8 people and no shareholders AFAIK (probably a very few more people for everyday stuff)
http://www.bitwig.com/en/company.html
Bitwig have a team around 18 times smaller. The need for financial return is so different it is not even funny. And having only 1 product it is a advantage in this case because it is the one that really can turn a profit. Plus they have been sponsored by EU funds (you can still see it here http://www.bitwig.com/ja/impressum.html) that should help very much too, instead of needing to pay back to the private banks or investors, the EU money cost a lot less (well in this cases at least).
If you are comparing it directly to Ableton it should be a lot cheaper, plus the HW version should be free (for the HW maker IIRC) that should make a lot of HW maker making free advertising to BWS too, by including it with the products they sell, I guess that Nektar, Livid and a few other will be quite happy with it.
The money that most people do here is around 400€ a month and making a living around here is quite more than 400€, putting 10 aside each month is hard enough for many people, and must of the people that really make money are little interested in making music (or giving decent wages)...The Mantra wrote:I don't see why people trip over Bitwigs price. EDIT
For what its worth, I do stay in a high poverty city in America and look around and see financial irresponsibility at all income levels around here.
I do IT at a small law firm that has been handling a lot of foreclosures since the recent housing bust. I even see rich people come with self inflicted financial wounds that make me wonder how they ever got rich in the first place. Maybe the stories I hear about clients and the things I see in my community make me feel jaded.
I don't mean to minimize peoples financial struggles. Its just that I often see people who make things way harder than it has to be for them selves and don't realize it.
I must admit that I couldn't be more ignorant of the financial situation on your side of the world. Ive never been outside of America. I will also note that I don't have any kids to feed so that allows me a certain amount of leeway with how I approach budgeting.pc999 wrote:

More on topic, is the name of the company that makes Bitwig called "Bitwig"?
If so, i guess that makes sense considering so many people refer to live as Ableton.

IMO Every living low income guy is quite good at managing its money, or he would not be a low income guy, he would be a dead by starvation guy
Anyway not going of more topic just to say that it was me that you quote not Ogopogo
And yes Bitwig company is called Bitwig.

@pc999 Wow, that's really cool. So I guess either we will get something cheaper than ableton or they will be really rolling in it. It's not like they don't deserve. And Ableton and its shareholders must really be quaking in their boots.

Well, I dunno about trippin' over the price, just speculation based on current daw prices and the one time they actually listed the boxed version for about 400usd at dv 24/7 (or whatever that store is) about 2 years ago. A lot has changed in two years thoughThe Mantra wrote:I don't see why people trip over Bitwigs price. I already have $500 set aside for it.
