Hendrix died from an overdose of Dilaudid from his girlfriend's stash - who was a banged up former pro skater I think - which he evidently didn't have proper resistance to. I played some of the best solos of my life about to totally nod. Problem is you get to a stage where you need the thing to make any move at all. Then you end up on the methadone clinic, you could be William S Burroughs going to the clinic the rest of your life. For me, it was spiritual death but I miss being pain-free. It's a trade-off, I sacrificed being comfortable so I could do music again.

Individuals take to substances differently. Heroin for me, while I could function, did this: it forced a kind of focus on the moment, there isn't really the capacity for extraneous bullshit, you reside right there in realtime on the spot. It's like swimming.
I took a lot of acid prepping for jury at CCM - this worked for me - and I aced my theory final blazing on it. Some people can't deal.
The thing I hate though about the Velvet Underground and Lou Reed 'Heroin', 'Waiting For the Man' and that one POS whose hook brags about I can't get a vein (asshole) is a romanticized slumming, the disease is so cool sort of aspect. NYC bullshit, felt to me like a later, punkass reading of the whole do heroin and be like Charlie Parker trip.
Burroughs called junk God's Own Medicine, G.O.M. Some people got strung out in days, some people chip at it for years, have to really try and get strung. It's serious business. Strong opiates are ultimately about wanting to tell your body to shut up and shut down. I found that angry people gravitate to it heavily.
Parker got strung out early in his life and nearly everything he did was as a junkie, whether well or sick with it. I don't think drugs through themselves makes anybody more apt to do music, but the body is a mixture of chemicals and if you feel better behind a strong coffee or a fix of dope, who's to say there's a problem until a real problem manifests? If you feel fine as you are, don't take anything, good for you. I felt like shit since I was born.
Anyway, Hendrix was not a junkie, his death was an accident. Some say it was murder. He took something his body couldn't kill. A junkie would probably not have died behind it.
