There IS a slightly different Imperial skin for smaller monitors: if you click download on the Imperial website and say no to the question about large monitors...

Looks nice, the "Dead Ringer" skin by White Tie for smaller screens, but I cannot resize the Mixer Control Panel, so I cannot work on my tracks because they're hidden by the MCP...

I have to go back to the default GUI, again...

I have the exact same problem.There are a lot of skins I like but no re-sizable mixer.

The other skins that I've tried so far had a Mix Control Panel that was re-sizable, only in the "Dead Ringer" skin the MCP isn't re-sizable (there appears an arrow but without any effect).

I always loved that little Matrix sequencer in Reason. This is great.
I wish Reaper's own piano roll behaved this way. That is, the left-click+hold to paint the notes in one sweep.

When you compare the looks of a Porsche and a Ferrari, you usually take the works models, you don't go around and compare the works model to a tuned version of the car... especially if one model isn't even tunable.

Not that i think this is worth a long discussion, but your arguments just don't make sense.

Your arguments don't make sense; one of the reasons I went with Reaper was its customization including the skins. In other words, the simple fact that it can look gorgeous. That 'other' DAWs can not do that, is their problem, not a Reaper issue.

It doesn't make sense to say that Reaper is ugly while installing a beautiful skin of your choice is as simple as dragging the skin-package onto the Reaper window.If you don't like it's looks you can change it, not by some 'car tuning analogy' but actually like flipping a switch... you know, like build-in functionality.

Skins ARE A FEATURE, and so, it is part of a program and can be compared.

the skins look really cool - problem is you still get the dodgy plugin windows and other stuff...its only part of the GUI as far as I remember...

If you don't like the plug-in windows, you can float any plugin by right clicking on the FX button on a track, which will bring up a drop down, then left click on the FX you want to float without the extra window. You can also left click any effect slot in your mixer window and bring it up floating.

The skins are great imo, but it's not just the fx windows that also need skinning, but everything else. As soon as you start using other windows you kinda get disconnected from the skin.

Anyway, midi is not one of Reaper's strengths. I wish they give back the manual selection tools in the piano roll.
Still it is my favourite DAW beside Studio One (and Logic 9 in OS X). Its audio engine and performance are amazing (really made me forgive it for its weak points).
I still prefer the default skin. Although there are many nice ones, but the default one is the most usable for me.

Reaper gets the job done for me regardless of the "personal" weaknesses...
I still can't find the right skin though.
I use the default. Not bad at all but... I'm still searching.

The thread I linked in the OP has animated gifs by the scripter, showing many of the functionalities.

I am just waiting for the "copy / paste of patterns" function, and Im gonna do a song with this baby.

And how did this become a discussion on DAW looks ? Oh well, the internetz.
