Why only landscape?

What I would really like to know is how difficult it is to program apps in portrait mode?
Most music apps seem to be restricted to landscape - why? When one is doing double (or triple) duty with an iPad being restricted to having to use only landscape can be a real p.i.t.a.
Does anyone have any ideas? Is it laziness on the part of the app developer? I am sure they can design boxes widgets, knobs and sliders to fit the portrait mode?

Huh.?. I was thinking the opposite. All those iPhone apps that only work in portrait mode are annoying when used along side universal apps. Especially when I have my iPad in a dock.
I do know that Auria allows use in both modes. In portrait, you get longer faders which is kinda cool.

But if one has an ipad, iphone apps are not really the versions to be buying
and I bet if you bought the iPad version of the same app it would be locked to landscape.

Except when its not locked to landscape and still iPad app, or when they don't have an official iPad version, just iPhone version. So yeah, I don't really like when they are locked to portrait.miden wrote:But if one has an ipad, iphone apps are not really the versions to be buyingand I bet if you bought the iPad version of the same app it would be locked to landscape.

My pet hate is apps where you have to change orientation to access some features.

For an ipad a portrait mode makes sense. Sadly other tablets went for 16:9, which is both too much in landscape & pointless in portrait.
I don't get it because there is something in-between 4:3 & 16:9, and it's.. A4.. that would have made the most sense for use in portrait, and still good for apps.

It's totally up to the developer / designer weather and how portrait & landscape modes are allowed.
If you don't like the app, then don't use it!
The A-series format have a ratio of 1:√2 which converts (in landscape) to 12.728:9 so imho that's still quite close to 4:3. If you draw a filling 4:3 rectangle on A4 paper, you're left with a strip of just a quarter inch.
The argument for 16:9 aspect ratios is ergonomics: ability to hold them as a phone. And to watch wide-screen TV ofcourse
Say what? 4:3 equates to 12:9. Inbetween that and 16:9 is simply 14:9.tony tony chopper wrote:I don't get it because there is something in-between 4:3 & 16:9, and it's.. A4.. that would have made the most sense for use in portrait, and still good for apps.

I didn't say right in the middleSay what? 4:3 equates to 12:9. Inbetween that and 16:9 is simply 14:9.
1.41421356237 isn't 1.333, but most importantly it allows viewing a standard A4 fullscreen.
I use a surface pro & its format is definitely a problem for apps, it always lacks room vertically, while there's too much room horizontally. It's not even ideal to browse web pages either. The argument for 16:9 aspect ratios is ergonomics: ability to hold them as a phone. And to watch wide-screen TV ofcourse
It's also hard to hold from the sides, because the weight isn't well balanced. On the other hand I find 4/3 too squarish to make a big difference when rotated, so A4.. that'd have been better.

Type that in every topic here, and we can shut down kvraudioBertKoor wrote:If you don't like the app, then don't use it!
Anyway, I have a dock, so I only hate it when apps are locked in Portrait mode (Figure, TNR-i).
Also, ever seen any portrait-shaped DAWs or plugins? Even the hardware world is in "Landscape mode".
Exceptions I can think of: Reason, individual modular modules

I guess it must just be laziness on the part of the app developer - when some developers can obviously have an app that can run in either mode, other developers just don't seem to bother - perhaps it is just too much trouble?
And I am not talking about small companies here, some of the apps I use are from MAJOR corporations!
Anyway it is what it is, but I for one do find it annoying to have to rotate the iPad which is on a holder on my stage rig, just to use a different app for a short space of time before going back to another one.
