I built a website a few months ago to track music genres, it's actually the second generation of it, the first was built around three years ago (and posted on here then).
Basically, the idea is list every music genre in the world, provide examples of what they sound like and also track the influence / influenced by relationship between music genres. For example, the site knows that Drum and Bass was influenced from Jungle and Techno Dance, and went on to influence Dubstep, Jazzstep, Jump up amongst others.
The purpose of the influences is so you can ask it questions like: "How did we get from Jazz to Dubstep" and have it determine the intermediate genres.
It's also totally community driven, genres, songs, influences etc are all created by visitors to the site. This ensures that EVERYONE will disagree about its results
I'm looking for a bit of feedback on the idea and people to contribute songs to each of the genres. You don't need to have the song on your computer as it uses the iTunes API. In particular some of the metal genres I'm not too familiar with and need a bit of love from those that do know about them.
