I have no clue how this constitures an ad hominem, and neither do I understand how a thread about a nifty new JS MIDI sequencer can attarct so many "Haters."

As I am new here, maybe I touched the wrong nerve by starting this thread.

OK ;)

Kind of funny being called a hater of Reaper hah (Join the IRC and see if you have helped as many people with Reaper as me) gotta love the over protective "Your a hater" attitude of any truth concerning anything around Reaper with 'some' people.

you have no idea how calling someone a whiner constitutes an ad hominem? seriously?

I'm sorry though about that one line. Also, hopefully you read the rest of my post. Cheers.

There are a few posts and sentences above that also, that may help you understand. Infact there has been an undercurrent of negativity in the thread, which I still fail to understand (again, maybe being new here I do not understand the negative groupthink here wrt Reaper).

Neverthless, that line was uncalled for, and I apologized to Mr. Bungle.

bungle wrote: It is also a fact that the small portion of us who bought the pro licence for Reaper own/use various other DAWs and actually point out usability issues more than anybody else to the Cockos devs

It is also a fact that the cheap licencing is not only a "fair trade" system but also a very clever "Less hassle" system for the devs "What do you expect for $60" very commonly thrown out in one thread while "Better than blah expensive DAW" is thrown out in another
I may not sign into all the "fact" you specify but agree to an extent.

First I think Reaper is a very well built daw with many important features that others lack.

To me things like:

a) folder tracks with built in bus - also visible and expand/collapse-able in mixer view.
b) very free routing abilities to just about anywhere in a project. And you can distinguish as you like between routing audio or midi.

stand out as quite unique - and I wish all daws would emulate the same.

A few seriously disturbing things though are:

a) a never ending trial period - meaning nobody pays unless they really want to.
And the poll made in a thread on forum stated that 90% of voters wanted it to stay this way. This does not mean all these voters did not pay for their license, but I think it is significant to who use it.

b) another thread about future of Reaper stated one of admins there - that we don't understand the idea behind Reaper. Also stating there is no ambition to be top daw.

I tried to sum up my own conclusions on these statements and find that most probably Cockos team work on Reaper as money is coming in - no more than that.

This also correspond to the slow development of the product - and is my own truth on this.

And also correspond to the number of votes in poll for keeping the never ending trial.

Some even stated that they were treated like grownup's because it does not stop working when trial period is over.
I'm saying:
- They never grew up if asking for any payment offend them
- and the small amount they ask for - makes it even worse

So those that want to pay for the larger number of freeriders to get some development done on Reaper - go ahead and pay for your license. That will make somebody work for 30 minutes.

c) the amount of bugs that remain over the years
2010 I bought my $60 license and have not seen much fixed or added to the product since then(not of importance to me). The buglist I added was never confirmed and even less fixed. Forget about feature requests.

I have the highest respect fór Justin as developer - what he did was many clever things. But with this policy it will never reach the potential that it deserves.

Yes i read the rest of your post, and it was just about as clever as the whiner bit, fine YOU think this sequencer is awesome for YOU.

It is actually a mod of one designed by the dev (Justin) from many years ago, so the idea that this has nothing to do with the devs is totally false (But i guess you knew that and chose to ignore it right)

It is not less than 200kb, why because it only runs in Reaper so it is actually closer to 10meg compressed and much much more uncompressed.

It does not crash is a rather wide ranging statement that you can not quantify as a single user with YOUR limited use cases (Not saying that it does, just pointing out a fact)

Updated hourly by the developer is again doing the Reaper 'Exageration' as to be expected and as soon as the development stops on this because of the limitations of JS, it will stop for ever, lets not forget about all the JS effects and arps and synths and so on and so on and so on that the devs just disappear (But now we get back to the "It only cost $60" - "It is just freeware" thing

But wait non of this has anything to do with what i was talking about haha

Unlikely. CockOS was formed by someone who had made himself very wealthy from previous endeavours, and had zero need for income in the first place. Given that his shares in AOL were once worth nearly $60million, he's probably worth more than all but the largest audio software companies. Reaper's pricing and demo policy is undoubtedly a reflection of the fact that he doesnt have to care about revenue, an advantage no other audio development company Im aware of has.

Read the thread title again, we are discussing a sequencer inside Reaper, so yeah its less than 200 kb.

It goes waaaay beyond a mod, and is in effect a new sequencer now. Your logic is as sound as linking this forum to Turing in a discussion. We are talking about jnif's work, and no, the Reaper devs are not doing it.

I love how with emphasizing "for YOU" you can nullify my positive comments on its functionality and stability. Going that way, we could just do away with all discussion posts on all forums, since all discussions are based on individual experiences and POV's.

Did you try v. 20 with a vst drum machine ? Its actually quite enjoyable.

Just as an extension of this, I think this also informs its development; I believe Reaper was conceived for the same reason as many open-source projects - it existed to 'scratch an itch'. Directions for Reaper which take it too far from what the developer finds useful for himself are less likely to be explored, IMO. Development of Reaper was fastest at the start, when its feature set could be culled from the 'best-of' of the existing DAWs that did the bits and pieces that suited. It never particularly innovated, instead it appropriated and refined that which other companies had already explored. Development probably looks slowest now because its 'caught up' with the feature set wanted, but there's no drive to move the bigger technological goalposts forward.

You clearly have no idea about the 'funding' that is behind Cockos and, very much related to that, the underlying philosophy of their marketing model. You should read up about who Justin Frankel actually is, as that might clear up your view a wee bit ;)

Just to help you: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Justin_Frankel

EDIT: I see the rabyt already posted something such :D
CrimsonWarlock aka TechnoGremlin, Moved to Reason and Rack Extensions exclusively (from Reaper and VSTs) several years ago.

Can people get this to run with ReaJS? It loads fine here and I can muck around with it, but its sequencer doesn't start (I only tried with energyXT yet). Do I need to trigger it somehow to get it running?

I might have some overlap going on with the Reaplugs installation though, looks like I'm not running the newest version, though I know I have it installed ..

I like the concept and JS appears impressive.

It is scratching that itch pretty well. And yes, it has more functionailty now than I will ever need making music so it has "caught up". So I do not see anything wrong if slow and steady developement, as long as there are no drstic make-overs or stability issues.

But in the end, it is a tool for creating music, just like any other, so YMMV and opinions will vary as well.

No, it is a mod of baby sequencer, end of story.

No i nullified the fact that this plugin (Yes JS is a plugin format) is awesome in general, but wait in comparison to what, yes in comparison to it's original version 'baby sequencer' in comparison to other plugin sequencers it is just a nice JS experiment like most things in JS.
muslimpunk wrote: Did you try v. 20 with a vst drum machine ? Its actually quite enjoyable.
So we have gone from awesome to quite enjoyable, that i can agree with ;)

It is very very rare that i agree with Whyterabbyt, but in this case people should read carefully and take note, there is little interest from the devs at cockos to work on anything big anymore and little tweaks are the order of the day (50 tiny tweaks in the changelog make people think it is "The fastest updated DAW")

Why is that important to the silliness touted when something like this plugin happens, because when a 3rd party uses JS or indeed the API (SWS) to do something that is actually useful, it is over emphasized by a lot of users.
Don't get me wrong here, in the last year or maybe even a lot more, there has been nothing added to Reaper by it's own devs that i would personally find useful, but SWS team add things that have made Reaper way more useful.

It wont work without a REAJS update, the latest versions of Reaper have had some JS updates that are needed for this particular plugin.
