Closest you can get in VST is probably Madrona Labs Aalto.
It's a great synth that's very capable of a wide variety of sounds. The built in sequencer is almost too much fun.
Also comes in a monophonic version available for free with the purchase of Computer Music magazine.

Also, there are some synths that can import single cycles or even samples. Bigtick Rhino is one, there are others in Reaktor and other places.

Looks like complex wavetables through either a wave folder or FM.
Zebra is perfect for these kinds of sounds. No other synth allows you to create complex, arbitrarily changing waveforms than Zebra. You might have to do a bit of creative patching (really, not much though) as opposed to getting weirdness right out of the box, but if the words "waveform" and "experiment" are a match made in heaven, Zebra is the synth!
Here's one of my experimental oscillator setups: (warning, it's a rucking facket!)

Fairly simple patch, once you understand what's going on, but endless timbral variety. You come to expect this from Zebra after a while. The downside? It's a black hole of endless tweaking fun

It does- IF you use it with a 225e MIDI Decoder/Preset Manager. Otherwise, no.memyselfandus wrote:does this thing have MIDI in??

As has been mentioned, Aalto comes the closest.anything almost exactly like it in a VST?

You should get the predecessor the 259 (non-e). They don't make them anymore so you'll need to get a second hand one. They're not that expensive...

I'¨ve never gotten Zebra to sound like that. Any hints?

can you do anything like this in Reason? any Refills?

Here is an example using Bazille. This is the straight output of 1 osc (bypassing filter and with no effects) recorded in realtime while tweaking (like the OP's Buchla example). I didn't bother setting up parameters to be controlled by knobs which would be more fluid. I mostly just used the mouse for this (which is clumsy) but it gives a taste of what Bazille can do.

I was using two oscillators, one ringmodulated and mixed with the other so as to produce amplitude modulation, one wave is morphable between sine, tri, saw and pulses and uses Zebra's basic oscillator sync, while the other oscillator acts as a windowing function due to the AM, making it more of a waveshaper than an oscillator. Both oscillators also had modulatable oscillator FX on them, and the windowing oscillator can move up through the harmonic series, whilst always staying in sync with the slave.Stollmeister wrote:Nice!Sendy wrote:Looks like complex wavetables through either a wave folder or FM.

See, this was an idea I wanted to try out, and Zebra is one of the few synths where you can create this sort of patch easily, with maximum speed and convenience.
