I am looking for a playable horns library, not loops, that sound real or at least close to real. It seems like this is one of the hardest things to come by. Any suggestions?

Check outKick-Ass Brass from AMG.
A guy on the cubase.net forum called Kevin Wright made this mp3 demo using KAB:
www.dexter.org.uk/KAB_Blues.mp3
There are also some mp3 demos at the AMG website. At the moment KAB is a sample library (Akai, Giga, HALion, Kontakt) but a VSTi with an extended sample set is in the works.

The upcomingStudioPhonik VSTifrom IK Multimedia/Sonic Reality could also be interesting. It’s not a specialized brass VSTi, but rather a ”virtual band” with drums, basses, keys, guitars and horns. No demos available yet, tho.

You should take a look at Quantum Leap Brass by East West, it is a 5 CD Set and has a good selection of multisamples solos and sections in various different styles, the trumpets are especially tasty

I must say that I've been pretty much impressed with the KAB demos.
Seems as if they managed to put the most essential (for me anyways) things into a rather conveniently priced (and sized) package.
Now, which version to get? Right now I'm mostly using the EXS, but as I have to start using Cubase as well rather soon, that's no option, so I'll be using Kontakt... they should put the instrument definitions for all softsamplers on one CD (I wouldn't mind if they charged a little more for that).

There are 3 kinds of people:
Those who can do maths and those who can't.
