The answer really depends on what you want to do with it. If you only need two inputs, Sweetwater has the Avid Mbox mini with an ilok and pro tools express for 149 USD with free shipping. I already have an Mbox pro, but ordered one of these for another computer.
If you need more inputs and have a FireWire interface, the M-audio Profire 610 can be found for under $150.

an external is great because you can connect it to every computer in a minute and it dont eat a slot in your pc.
also it sometimes comes as a decent controller like the steinberg ci series.
i have a ci2+ and i never regret it.

I don't recommend RME. I had a motu before and regret selling it.
Pigments Presets, Omnisphere Expansions, Dune, Serum, and Thorn Sound Packs. Diva, Zebra, TAL, and Repro Sound Banks.

It depends of the needed features.
Phantom, 2x analog in, headphone output, midi, null-latency monitoring and USB bus-powered? I would think of the UR22.
The UR22 has also a max samplerate of 192Khz (CL2+ only 48Khz), is USB2 and frequency goes a bit over the CL2+ (up to 22Khz instead of 20khz)

Trust in British quality
I picked the Focusrite Scarlett 2i4 and it is so stable. Yet so affordable. Way much better than Steinberg Ci2, Yamaha Audiogram6, M-Audio FastTrack & Tascam.

yep thats true, of course you must study the specs: for me 48Khz is enough.4damind wrote:It depends of the needed features.

If your computer is just for audio then I would seriously consider an internal card, you get much lower latency. I had an emu 1202 (cant remember the number now) internally and regret selling it but it was a hassle with other stuff I did with my machine. I now have a UR28M external as I use Cubase and it integrates well.

+1 for the Steinberg UR22, the best usb card in this price range.
if you don t need phantom/HiZ inputs for mic and guitar/bass recording this
internal card with digital in and out is very good (read the reviews)

Agreed mate, it actually causes problem in marketing, but let's face it, late in 60's when someones got radio made in Japan he would say: oooh how awfuldamoog wrote:Developed in Buckinghamshire and mass produced in China4damind wrote:...made in Chinaphreaque wrote:Trust in British quality

After all, it is pure marketing policy here, they can manufacture in their own places & countries but they don't want us to have reliable, tank-built quality product
