Hello,

I produce trance music (uplifting), I have a little question : a track may have more than one chord progression ?

Example in this track
We have at the beginning a little pluck melody, at the beginning of the break a different pluck melody and after the main lead. All these elements comes from one chord progression or there are different ?

Hope you understand my question... :)

Thank you !

Its certainly not unusual for a track to modulate into a different key signature but in this case I don't think the Artic Motion track you posted modulates.

I am not in front of my Daw at the moment so I can't tell you what the key signature is other than to say its in a minor key (like most uplifting trance tunes then)

If you want to find out what key its in just load it into your Daw and start playing various notes and it will soon become apparent what notes work and what notes don't.

Within a short period of time you should be able to tell what the key signature is and what its tonal center is.

As for chord progressions within a key, sure its ok to change things up. You don't have to limit yourself to the same static sequence of chords throughout. When the order of chords change it opens up more melodic opportunities just like the Artic Motion track.

Actually the Artic Motion track really reminds me a lot of the Bogdan Vix - Stella Maris mix.

which I think (from memory) was written in Eb minor.

So you could start your experiments hitting the notes and chords within the key of Eb minor or whatever. The main thing is to try to reverse engineer the track to see what's going on after which you'll have the answer to your question.
Take the above with a huge pinch of salt.:)

Hey !

Thank you for taking the time to answer me :)

The track is in D#min, i'm not very good in music theory so i'm not sure if my question have sense, I know that 99% of EDM use a single key signature in a track but my question is, in the example there are 3 different melodies, all these melodies have to fit together or we can use completely different melodies (but in the same key) ?

A track can have different sections with different chord progressions, yes, even if it doesn't change keys.

As Sendy says.
if it sounds good it can have as many independent melodies as you want but I wouldn't go too crazy, I mean you don't want to flood the listeners short term memory or make the tune too disjointed otherwise it will sound like you've just stitched a few different tunes together even though they all fit within the key signature.

Some of the best uplifting Trance tracks seem to move seamlessly between melodies
For example Airbase - Modus Operandi

Pretty cool tune if you ask me :)

Ok, thank you both for your help :)

I agree with you, Airbase produce very good tracks !!

A vamp is a section (or several) where there is no apparent chord changes. Some use vamps by omitting the third and simply playing the power chord or the 1-5-7 notes. This allows for key/mode changes while the foundation remains very stable.
