They talk about MIDI all over the place, but I can't find that they mention VSTi anywhere on the ableton website....?

Post

... it still doesn't feature rex-import - or have I missed something?

Post

the upgrade from live3 is a no-brainer here ...

... but there does appear to be NO mention of vsti on the site as mentioned - 'software instruments' 'virtual instruments' abound but no explicit mention of vsti ...

... does this mean built-in instruments (simpler / impulse) and outboard MIDI gear only or are ableton being really coy over the whole thing ???

either way it STILL looks an awesome upgrade

I played around with various "light" versions of live that came with soundcard and the like, and it always seemed tlike a fantastic concept, buti could never see myself trying to work ENTIRELY with loops only. I have the same problem with acid, the VST support is utter crap, so i don't use it anymore. Godd job it cost me f**k all.

So i figure if this new version of live is really as good as it sounds, it might swing me into using it. If they can make the VST and MIDI stuff be as live and liquid as the audio clips etc, then it'll be the ultimate live composition tool.

I frankly probably can't afford it but if i sell off all the crap i don't use(and there is plenty of that  ) then it might be a great purchase.

Funny thing is, its not that i don't want to use the stuff i have. Its just that i buy some of it thinking it will spur me on, but having new stuff doesn't change the fact that i don't have much time at the minute! Next year i will have more free time, when i am back to being a scrounging student :D

sounds good to me. I don't even use it live, I only use it as a studio. the session view is my sampler and on the fly recorder, also my remixer and mpc like player, and the arranger mode is the daw and micro editor, the clip automation combined with the track automation finish it off, it really didn't need anything else but this upgrade is phenominal.
Sounds good to me - one thing that would really swing it for a relative beginner like me - did Live 3 come with a decent paper manual, as I presume Live 4 will too if this was the case? I'm fed up with fumbling around poorly documented applications...

yep, Live 3 came with a manual, unless you opted for the download in which case you could still order the manual for twenty dollars, any way its a great little read, I keep it with me in my bag and just read it over and over..I wish that guy Jorgen from energy xt worked with Ableton I think thats the kind of people abelton is about.

Indeed. Another player just entered the Major League. I might have a Cubase SX 2 for sale at the end of the summer ... :-)
When I was younger I used to be in doubt. These days I'm not so sure.

hm, i'm quite happy i still didn't buy ableton yet! and i really doubt i'll even purchase the 4.0 although i'm really in need of a software like this.

BUT

instead of introducing better usuabilty by i.e. implementing context menus, user definable actions, easier loop length switching, sample groups (i.e. by utilising a subslot system) etcetc they charge +100 bucks for an update that does imho introduce some nice features but i never saw where they really sit down and improved it. it's really far away from beeing perfect (in my opinion) and while it takes years of development until they reach 4.0 the improvements beeing made are rather significant (never change a running system?).

i'm so happy that i didn't spent a cent on it yet and i already hear my friends shouting bout charging for an update again that doesn't really fix issues.

the final question is:

WHERE IS A >REAL< COMPETITOR TO ABLETON LIVE?

there is so much room for improvements, why is there no interest in developing a better product?

really strange.

The Sequencer landscape has changed forever!

Live 3 is also a rewire master and slave! There will be very very little that Live 4 cannot do!

I have never read any thread anywhere and read so many
determined to drop thier copies of Cubase, Sonar e.t.c

It is really heating up for the big boys. Surely they will respond significantly. If not then Live4 may clean up over the next year! 8)

I wonder what the Computer music awards will look like this year!

Also just who are the big three on the PC now..?

Sonar 3, Tracktion and Live 4?

The only thing that I think will possibly rival Live 4 is Tracktion 2... 8) I am sure Jules has something up his sleeve  Although it will have to be pretty good...

Ahhhhh what a time to be a customer...I think my upgrade price will be £25 for Live 4 :o

Reason & Live are distributed by M-audio, so they're in bed to a degree. I see this as a big blow to the Reason/Live combo that's been so popular in the last year, I anticipate some crazy announcement from Proppellerheds to compensate for this VSTi support. I don't think the shocks are over yet, folks.

VST instrument hosting is HUGE.

Live (and Reason) are the two most-stable programs I use. Cubase is fine most of the time, but can get flaky here and there.

Live hosting VST instruments? Cubase on stage is now useless.

Thanks, Ableton, this is awesome!

However, I'm not going to just up and dump Cubase, though. Cubase is still the better environment, IMO, for day-to-day multitrack recording and mixing. I may try to do a full-blown band track (drums, bass, guitars, vocals) just to see how it goes, but at this time I'm skeptical that it will outperform Cubase in that regard.
