If they're thinking about going with different forum server software altogether it could be even longer. :) Hopefully it's just a matter of security patching or upgrading to the latest vBulletin to get this sorted. Perhaps this was the impetus for them to take it down:

I hope I am wrong.

This is the right time for someone to create a dedicated solely propellerheads focused third party forum, I wonder if anyone will do it..
I don't think they could go it alone as the only music software company without a forum. It is a strange situation though - they haven't put out a newsletter explaining the situation and my twitter feed isn't alive with information.

It isn't sending the right message to their user base nor to potential buyers of their products. Like you said, REs aren't going to get the exposure they (probably) need so all in all......it sucks!

By the way, EditEd4TV created a Reason forum a few years back that may still be alive.

Seriously?

It's just Props being Props, treating its user base like an afterthought and not bothering to keep them updated.

Even a "there's nothing to report" update is something, as it's a gesture of respect. But they just don't know to do that. Or they choose not to.

But Reason only got MIDI out 6 months ago; they're not exactly first responders.

I don't think it's hurting sales too much at the moment, but it would seem strange if the forum wasn't up and running by December 1st (a week from today), when the Christmas sale should start.

People singing the praises of rack extensions they've just bought would definitely spark even more sales.

That's something I keep hearing around in various forums. Can't be good for business to get that rep.

It's Black Friday in 5 days. Closing down the forums just before Black Friday & Christmas time doesn't sound like a good idea. From what I've heard the RE sales aren't very good and this sure doesn't help. Although I respect the reason behind the action because they would probably get more problems if personal data was hijacked, it does feels like they took it down before they had a good plan to get it/something up again.

Yeah. I strongly suspect you are right. If that's the case I'm going to abandon Reason. They won't get another penny out of me.

It's a very, very strange mix; they're stone-faced silent about everything, yet they're years behind the times on some stuff.

I could see being ultra-secretive if they were cutting edge with things, but they're mainly just playing catch up, so why bother with secrecy?

And the secrecy actually works against them, as it creates higher expectations.

And with something like this, it's just basic customer service to update the community periodically with progress reports, or even lack-of-progress reports.

Propellerheads kind of had to do that, as the forum log-in is the same for the shop log-in, and they store users' cc info.

It would have been a right mess if hackers got in and started clicking "buy" buttons.

There is no general purpose vBulletin exploit. A moderator used the same password on vBulletin and MacRumors. Most likely the same login/password appeared in a leaked password database. Once someone figured out the moderator's password, they were able to post an HTML announcement which contained an elaborate attack that ultimately lead to the sites being compromised. It's all explained here:

http://krebsonsecurity.com/2013/11/vbul ... ord-reset/
http://blog.canonical.com/2013/07/30/ub ... st-mortem/

Props just needs to:

1) make sure all moderator passwords are not recycled from other sites
2) disable HTML posts/announcements for everyone except the site administrator
3) bring the forum back up

Of course, they won't do that because it would be too easy. They will most likely spend 5 years coding proprietary forum software which will run as an expensive Rack Extension. :)

Wow, that's sad. They do really seem to enjoy shooting themselves in the foot whenever they get the opportunity. But then they say "Oh, no worries, just a scratch!" as they bleed out and hobble around. Their stubborn pride paired with their hands off approach to PR is their biggest obstacle.

No KVR thread is complete without conspiracy theories, doomsday scenarios, and armchair experts. Oh, and snarky comments from idiots like me.

Is it possible to have all four in one post?
