I tend to agree with this assessment. But I would add that it's not out of reach for an "unknown" music composer/producer to make waves in the wider culture of our times, but there is a massive qualification: you will HAVE TO make something truly arresting, surprising, moving, utterly impressive, and maybe even (pardon the cliche) revolutionary.

All of that sounds like smarmy pie in the sky talk, but it's inescapably true. Why? Because otherwise, as zerocrossing indicated, you will just fade back into the crowd, and the "crowd" has all the same tools and all the same access to exposure via the internet that you have.
Good points, but I also want to add that just because you don't have an "arresting, surprising, moving, utterly impressive, and maybe even revolutionary" take on music, you shouldn't give up. I can't tell you how many times I've enjoyed a band or act that was totally derivative and non spectacular in the right context. I wouldn't have purchased their album, or paid a cover to see/hear them, but they added to the experience in a positive way.

I'll also say again that even if you never post a track and just hide away in your bedroom making music (I mostly do live improvised music that goes away as soon as the ram buffer is purged) but you derive some sort of pleasure or satisfaction from it, then you've succeeded as a musician.

Not sure who said this (it mistakenly gets attributed to Henry D. Thoreau) but it's an excellent quote:

"Use what talent you possess: the woods would be very silent if no birds sang except those that sang best."

maybe someone already said something about this (long tread, I didn't read it all) -- but musical success doesn't depend on talent alone (though of course you should have some), but it depends much more on being at the right place at the right time and having the right contacts. Read this article about it:

Ok, fair enough. I did miss that.
Thanks.
OP, once you do that, you deserve whatever is thrown at you.

Yea, I agree. Those words of mine were bordering on hyperbole but I overstated it a bit just to drive home the point that the "please listen to my music" scene on the internet is, and has been for at least 7-8 years, so completely flooded that it's going to be par for the course to be largely ignored. Since the OP seemed depressed about that I felt like it has to be spelled out very clearly that this is what you should expect---very low interest.

This is one of the reasons why the "long tail" theory of new era music marketing via the internet failed for the most part. The tail is just way, way too long and it drops off too quickly. What you get is a few outliers who generate a big fan base on YouTube, and then millions of people in the long tail getting almost no attention.

It's possible to overcome that, but no one is going to be able to tell you or me or the OP how to do it, other than to say "Be effing brilliant."

But, as you said, if you can deal with the fact that getting internet fans isn't going to be easy and you do your own music because you enjoy it, or maybe a small group of people appreciate it, then remaining low profile isn't an issue.

The entire situation is you believing that you're entitled to a number of things. You "aren't good at melody" and I'm certain you have never been involved with melody as a musician. Not sure why you think you are ready to make music, but you picked up that cue, the internet exposed to you particular people that got noticed for doing shit. And you revealed that you know it's shit too, but you_want_that.

You need validation and encouragement from THE INTERNET as kind of a prime impetus. In these very remarks you have confounded the time you, at your honest moments, know you need to spend on craft, with time for marketing. You have set up some carts and they aren't pulling any horse, which is upsetting to you. You're in a terrific hurry to arrive, in an area of human endeavor where the people that become great devote their lives to, and are humble before it, music. Who are you, why are you entitled to anything in a few months? Chances are, you aren't built to do music at all. One would have a wholly different attitude then.

The whole situation is a mess like this. Why would anyone believe in you doing something "great"? It looks like to me you lack experience with "great". You want to be the next avicii, apparently. The world doesn't need you, believe me. Typically in the world there is a price to pay, on a number of fronts, for that amount of recognition. You seem to think the internet owes you the attention and that you can build yourself out of the love it will show you. But The Internet is not going to provide testicles for you.

Yes. All of this, again and again and again and again. Not just in musical endeavours, but in so many other endeavours we see the same sense of entitlement.
In all greatness, there is humility. Nothing wrong with the OP, but he's just a reflection of the age we live in.
For my part, I'm no greater than anyone else. No more and no less. If we don't create for ourselves, we have no right to create for anyone else I'm afraid. Get this: The world just doesn't care, and nor should it. What was once new is now old; the internet is just another stone on the path and not the great panacea. Do the opposite of what's expected and then maybe you'll find something new. Just going with the flow leads to nothing but more uninterested followers who are looking for their own slice of the same pie. The blind not even leading the blind.
It's boring. It really is. No offense intended, but no one cares because they really don't. It's an easy answer.

Ome of the old old midi guys I think it was Dave Smith or Roger Linn once said ...to paraphrase When people go out to see a band perform. They are going out To See....A Band.....Perform Which is not the same as going out to dance. When someone goes out to dance the music and the music creation process is less important because they are only intersted in if they can dance to it. When looking up at the stage at a DJ and they have face in front of the laptop the audience doesn't know if that person is performing some amazing musical/technological feat or sending an email.

When I surf for music. It's not bandcamp or soundcloud it's youtube. I want to see people performing and engaging with thier audience.

I would have never listened to her originals had it not been for her performance of covers. I like Julie Nunes. i like the person, I like the stories. I like her approach to writing songs, arranging and producing them. She's not high tech, she's not the greatest singer or uke player in the world but she works well with what she has. She's been on major tours, She's done the late nite talk show curcuit. She's got a following that wants to pay to see her live and buy her stuff. I've bought her stuff. Not because I need to have it on a harddrive, more so because I believe in her and I think she deserves greater recognition. If buying an ep helps her to pay the bills and advance her career I'm all for it.

It's not enough to be able to "make music" regardless of how good you are or what type of equipment you have. It's more important to engage an audience in "your story" who "you are" and reflect the awareness of others. Staring at a sstatic soundcloud page while music is playing is not engaging enough.

Yup, there's a lot of ADD out there. Nobody can just sit still and listen to music anymore. It needs to be accompanied with epilepsy inducing flashing lights, explosions and several drops per track just to break the overbearing monotony of the previous 5 second segment. It'll be interesting to see how things turn out 20 years from now. Will we see a return to proper appreciation of the space between the notes? Or will it just get worse until we end up at a point where music becomes 2 second blasts of white noise layered with fart sounds which triggers a stimulating full body electric shock in our nano clothing?
