I bought animoog yesterday and have been really blown away by it. It's not just the sounds, as the expression that can be eked out from this thing makes it seem more, erm .... 'alive' than any other iOS synth I have tried (make that ANY synth). Really can't put it down. Whether it satisfies your criteria I cannot say, but at it's current price I think it is just a no-brainer to get anyway

I own Magellan and hate it. I am sure I am alone in this

As for the other two ?? I checked out YouTube videos but neither really excited me, though you might find they suit your purposes more. I did almost spring for the imini but I'm really more interested in getting Thor

I have them all and I think iSEM or iMini are the most 'oldtime 70's sounding personally... but I might be completely wrong. The 70's sounded very different to different people ;)

Just to say I think Magellan is excellent.

But I would agree iMini or iSEM are probably more 70s sounding then again since IMini is based on the 1971 Moog mini and iSEM is based on the 1974 Oberheim SEM that's not that surprising :)

I'm really enjoying iSEM great sounds.

Hi all,

I have read 2 bad reviews on iTunes about iMini saying it does not work on iOS 5.1 but I don't know how old these reviews are. Maybe it is already fixed.

Does anybody know if iMini 1.2 works on an iPad 2 with iOS 5.1?

Thanks in advance.

I think both iSEM and iMini are great for 70's sounds. Magellan can dial up a wider variety of sounds and could probably nail a lot of 70's if you were willing to tweak it more.

Thank you for recommendations. Truth is that thes apps are so affordable that one can buy so many of these but then one would spend most of the time just noodling around and (experience talking..) but I'd like to concentrate on one.
The instrument itself (iPad) is not affordable though...

I agree that the Arturia products will be more 'retro' sounding..if you use them in a retro way. I think they capture the sound of what they are emulating very well. They're also used in a lot of new music as well. They are somewhat limited to what they are where Animoog and Magellan are more feature packed/versatile. Moog just released a Minimoog D sound set for Animoog thats pretty good.

WRT iMini...it does not play well in a virtual midi environment on iPad, and Arturia is non-responsive to fixing this. Using the iPad as a sound module should work fine. iSem works great though...

iMini will work on my iPad 1 but only if it is loaded into Tabletop app. Arturia is "non-responsive" is a bit of an understatement. Too sad since I am not fond of Tabletop. We live in hope however.

+1 for animoog, even it isn't good for the type of music you want to do, especially since it is on sale for so little.

iSem or iMini (just like everyone has said). That being confirmed...I also have the Animoog and Magellan and they can do SOME 70's sounds, but would probably be more flexible in variable circumstances that the previous mentioned. Magellan sounds more digital to me than the others, but is still an awesome beast for what it is!

i formerly retract this statement, having spent some more time with it

i had previously found it a little unintuitive and a little overwhelming (the gui felt a little too overfull and claustrophobic)...also wasn't overwhelmed by the presets, which is quite a big thing for a preset whore like myself

but i have managed to find some kind of flow through it now, and have enjoyed making tweaks to sounds. but what i have enjoyed most is the ability to have 4 octaves like i do in nanostudio, but with the ability to use 2 different patches at the same time (worth the asking price alone)

so yeah, erm, magellan  :P :D
