Sorry if this is an old question, but I'm totally new to ipad music
What ipad should I get?
I'd like to play synths and record, and export the midi file or the wav file.
And hear playback through my PC, possibly.
Small time midi and wav arrangements too, with basic mix fx.
What model ipad should I be looking at.
If you could advise, then I could flog my old ipad 1 (yes, that one) and get a model more suited to music.
I normally work with Studio One on my i7 laptop running Windows 7, so whatever compatibility there would be great.
thanx v much = kev

thanks, damuso
Ipad Air with 128gb sounds about right.
I'll flog one of my guitars to get the loot together.
Have you any three favourite music apps, or other essentials, you recommend?

It's the early days of serious music making on iPad. I would expect rapid advancements in software in 2014. As of now the free GarageBand for iOS is deceptively powerful and indicator of what's possible. Cubasis is another great step forward it weighs in at around $50.00. Korg also has a couple of synths out (MS20 and PolySix) , IK Multimedia seems to have wholeheartedly embraced the iPad so keep an eye on them.kevvvvv wrote:thanks, damuso

So start with GarageBand... there are clear limitations to it, buts it's a risk free way to start to get a feel for what you personally want out of a iPad music production experience then from there you can shop accordingly.

I would suggest keeping the old iPad if you can't "flog?" it for much money. It makes an incredible controller with the Lemur app combined with Reaktor ensembles or other things.kevvvvv wrote:If you could advise, then I could flog my old ipad 1 (yes, that one) and get a model more suited to music.
Using multiple iPads:

bftucker .... I enjoyed your performance.
The bass riff was great (memorable in fact), as were the "loose" drums, which swished well, washing the arrangement with rhythm.
I later checked out lemur, which looks amazing but complex
The guitar I'll sell is my Taylor 814ce, which should get me an iPad Air 128gc - plus some change.
And I'll keep my iPad 1 - cos you never know
Thanks again for the v cool performance
Now I have to think about starter apps, so all experiences welcome

Uh....that isn't me.
Rheyne is a friend of mine who lives in New Jersey. Please check out his other 92 videos. If you start at Number 1, you will get to see his development as his iPads get more numerous. By the way, he works in a music store...but that might be obvious from all the equipment.

Animoog (which Rheyne is using in the above video) works fine on my iPad 1. Better than fine, in fact, it works great. On sale at the moment!! $4.99 is as low as it has been since it was first released. Buy it as soon as you read this.kevvvvv wrote:Now I have to think about starter apps, so all experiences welcome
Another I recommend would be Sunrizer. Some of the newer snths (Nave, for example) either require an IOS I can't install on my old ipad or need to be tweaked (Thor, for example)so that it does not use so much processing power by turning off effects or playing monophonically.

Rheyne is insanely good with his tools. I've been following him for a while now and am continually impressed by his Live workflow.bftucker wrote:Uh....that isn't me.![]()

Just to keep everybody in the loop ....
I've splashed out and got an iPad Air with 128gb.
Now I'm searching for the best apps to use - midi / loop stuff / digi keyboard
Cubasis looks like a good start as it uses the new inter app audio
- which will no doubt be the winner among the connectivity technologies available, as Apple support it.
But otoh all the Pocket Audio stuff looks good too.
So much choice
All suggestions for next steps welcome

Anyone using 32 or 64G? I'm not sure about shelling out for 128 - not going to keep a lot of samples on it, but certainly want to run a daw, some synths, etc. My guess is the app footprint is not that great so even 32 is fine (I won't store much music/video).

JoeCat ..... I know what you mean about only needing 32 or 48.
It seems a reasonable amount by today's standards.
But in 2-3 years you'll still have your ipad, and 32 gb will seem puny in the face of ever hungrier apps that you "must-have"
We're just seeing the beginning of ios music - it's got a long way to go, so be prepared.

Your right - at some point I'll be thinking "why didn't I just spend that extra hundred"?kevvvvv wrote:JoeCat ..... I know what you mean about only needing 32 or 48.
