Gone back to my roots a bit. My old band has a stockpile of songs, mostly just in demo form, or even just crappy rehearsal room tapes - my plan is to work through them all.

At my current work-rate, we're looking at a posthumous album...

Here's the first tune to be exhumed!

http://www.vurt.dsl.pipex.com/myweb10/spacehopper.mp3

It's a deeply profound and sophisticated song about space travel, substance abuse, lust and interstellar perversion.

Personnel:

Me - Vox Continental (sorry t-willy! ), Yamaha CS-5, Nord Lead (all I could get out of it were silly noises  ) robot-voices, Fender 12-string electric.

Mr Craig Pickles - lead vocals. Craig is currently behind a camera in Hell's Kitchen...

PC Marcus Hayward - bass, backing vocals. Currently pounding the beat in Liverpool :-o

Mr Ian Davies - electric and acoustic guitar. Still don't know what Ian really does.

Mr Mark Davies - drums. All round good guy, best mate, head chef and father of three. He's always tired...

I clipped the end off

Was going to prune this and enter it in this month's compo, but I've just heard Sleek's tune. 8)

[edit] - and "please try to keep it civil and decent" - it's been a loooong week

Hang on while just press play again...

Yeah, really enjoying this - I've bought stuff that sounds like this. :)

I'm thinking Inspiral Carpets for some reason. (Except for the voice - that's more Klaatu).

Sounds a bit tinny though, but hey.
Whoops that ending.

Scousers, indie pop! Nice retro sound. It does sound a bit like the carpets though! :D

I like this a lot :D. Great stuff. It is very Inspiral Carpets, but that's a good thing!

Please tell me your going to finish all the other songs, re-master (with proper monitors!) and create a CD. Cause I'll be on the list to buy it! :)

as well as the wuite obvious inspiral influences i can hear some jeffeerson airplane in here too,and other nice sixtys stuff.
love the vox continental 8)

Thanks guys! :D

@Glooper - that's the plan!

I think my Vox Continental is the culprit behind the carpets comparisons (it's a Vox, not a Farfisa! :x  ) as they've never been an influence, although I do really like some of their stuff. A lot of the other tunes features loads of Clavinet, Rhodes, synth mayhem, trumpets, percussion, slide guitar...We usually got compared to bands like The Doors (because of the Vox again...and the Rhodes),Booker T & The MG's, The Charlatans, but then we weren't trying to sound like any of them either

@donks - sorry la! not a single scouser among us! :D

It's funny that a lot of you have mentioned the inspiral carpets, as noone ever mentioned them when we were active! And it's never really occurred to me before. Having said we weren't trying to sound like the Charlatans, I did completely rip off "Can't Get Out of Bed" for a Rhodes line...

Yeah a definate 60's/70's sound but not outdated. There's quite the freshness to this indeed. Do you only have full tracks available for reworking or separates too?

Loved the energy going on, and hearing this surely appetizes for an album :)

Post

thanks Mystahr! I have about several "finished" tracks (stereo mixes only I'm afraid - no separate tracks), portastudio sketches (but I no longer have a portastudio), a couple of tunes on 1-inch reel-to-reel, and stuff recorded straight into a crappy tape-recorder. All the original tapes and files are either languishing in record company vaults, or are still sitting in my former manager's ( :x  ) office - he's probably taped over them anyway :(

I've just listened to you song before going to bed, and i must say i don't regret...
Great song... :D A pleasure to listen to...

Too bad the mix and sound quality are not as good as the song. Maybe it's me. I'm not used to 60s sounds.

Cool! I kept imagining I was watching the musical interlude in a Jose And The Pussycats cartoon. A lot of fun.
