I can't get my head around it yet, it's so incredible... :o

While searching for some (intelligent!) interviews with musical legends, I found a tutorial where DJ Giorgio Moroder explains his secret technique how to write songs.

This must be the key to success! I'm sure if I use this approach, I can get into the Billboard Charts... :wink:

She was pretty big in Germany wasn't she?

I read somewhere iirc it was her biggest market outside U.S.

Hard to believe really. Also the creators of the most twisted porn anyone would want to watch.

Does anyone find a correlation here? Am I on my own again with this one?


I have to say though, German people have excellent taste in music. So open minded. A real taste for the exotic. British people are so xenophobic. Not so Germans. Dead cosmopolitan!

Is Japan really such a big market still? They've been in recession forever and people there hardly buy anything.

The first songs of Donna Summer - and the most successful ones - were produced in Giorgio Moroder's studio in Munich/Bavaria! :)

Now he lives in Los Angeles, as far as I know. But he still speaks perfect German with a slight touch of South Tyrolean dialect:

Good question.

I think surprisingly they still are. What with the way the music sales are measured and the Japanese being crazy for their tech, which they often get ahead of everyone else (hardware at least).

They have a young generation totally besotted with fame and all the rest of it. And of course the younger generation really drive viral stuff.

But I could be wrong. U.S. Germany and Japan were always the holy trinity.

Japan I could understand, but Germany? Till I met the people. Very open, down to earth, warm hearted, fiercely intelligent and the best sense of humour ever!

Anyway, lots of acts were massive in Germany, not just Donna Summer. Laura Branigan was another one iirc. But I might be wrong. I know she was very big in the gay clubs.


I'll just leave it at that.

Perfect German you say? Best education system in Western Europe is probably why. Apart from the Dutch. But best not to say that. Apparently you chaps don't get on. Hating each other worse than you hate the English, which is saying something.

Sorry, I didn't mean to troll and derail this thread by turning it into one man's very small minded viewpoint about how things are in the larger scheme of things.

Harold Faltermeyer did work with her, and he was the colleague of Giorgio Moroder...

The producer was Jack White...

Giorgio Moroder definitely worked with her. Might have just been doing arrangements though, not sure as producer. Easy enough to look up I suppose.

Funny thing I just realised was that Laura Branigan had a voice that was remarkably similar to Donna Summer. I remarked on this to my g/f at the time and she said it was a commonly accepted belief in the music industry that Laura was the white version of Donna. Well that sounded a bit racist, but it was accepted that Laura Branigan sounded like Donna Summer. I don't think anyone thought that she did it on purpose, more like it was just that she happened to sound like her...


Maybe you need to be a Donna Summer fan and Laura Branigan fan, which I was and still am, to spot the similarity.

She plays quite a bit around Germany too. I think she did some session backing vocals for Massive Attack too at some point.

Damn she's sounding good in that video. f**k, that lady really can sing! If Giorgio Moroder is still alive he should produce some of her stuff.

You got to admit though - Donna Summer was his biggest gig. And she was way bigger in Germany than she was anywhere else in the world, apart from her native U.S. of course.

Me too. f**k. Is that a god damn M-Audio controller he is using? I hope he doesn't try triggering any drum sounds with those pads. Or any piano sounds from the keyboard for that matter. The rotary knobs might be ok though. As long as he doesn't expect the controller assignations to be in the same spot next time he turns it on.
