Hi guys, can anyone recommend a good preamp plugin? Mainly for adding some more vintage character and drive. I don't looking for all the vintage emulation of compressor's and eq's, just pure preamp VST.

Thanks in advance :)

Soundtoys Radiator
Emulates Altec 1567A very CPU heavy though.

don't forget Nick Crow TubeDriver (free), WaveArts Tube and StudioDevil VTP (the latter being my favourite).
I don't know what to write here that won't be censored, as I can only speak in profanity.

Preamp is Nebula's specialty.

Didn't use the Nebula based VSTs a high amount of cpu?

Soundtoys and Studio Devil looking atm best for me. Again thanks guys! :)

Yes and it also depends on the program. Properly sampled Nebula programs done with high end A/D converters can be nearly indistinguishable from hardware.

There is also a low cpu version of Nebula, but the cost is high latency.

Wavearts Tube Saturater is a great vst - BUT it's very very cpu hungry.

So be prepared for a lot of bouncing, but it sounds class.

Studio Devil VTP. Wow.

What I find especially impressive about it is the cumulative effect it can have on a full mix. A lot of software preamps have a pretty obvious "sound", which makes them immediately appealing when dropped on a single track, but a preamp's job is not full-on distortion - it is meant to simply boost a signal. The inherent side-effects of good gear are a welcome addition, but they're meant to be subtle. It is in this that VTP excels IMO.

Wave Arts is the best I've heard.
