For more responses post this at the Maschine forum on NI's site. I'm sure they'll have plenty of suggestions for you....

This is an old thread, but I'm a new Maschine owner and just found it.
In general: immediate playability. Consistent color coding (NI's own kits just use default colors, which annoys me). Something I can't find elsewhere -- all the basics are already covered, and NI and Goldbaby and some others have some great offerings.
What doesn't seem to be covered very well on Maschine is unconventional percussion -- things along the lines of Soundiron's percussion libraries, or True Strike Tension. Loading Kontakt or Kore Player to get at those is kind of a hassle compared to just loading a Maschine kit, and gets in the way of that "immediate playability" I was talking about.
Oh, and no muddy kicks, and no pads that launch riffs or fills with their own tempo (again something NI is occasionally guilty of).
As far as what I would want specifically: it's hard to say. I seem to be moving into a space between the weirder instrumental hip-hop and sort of Flying Lotus-ish wonky post-dubstep. I have an interest in industrial, glitch and chiptune sounds.
I'm a big fan of the Upercussion kits (I have Bitkits, Digicussion 2 and Monstrosities, and plan to pick up more). The amount of stuff you get for the price is great, and the content is pretty great too.

Hey, thanks for the heads up. The project has been delayed but is very much alive.foosnark wrote:This is an old thread, but I'm a new Maschine owner and just found it.
Would you care to elaborate your color coding ideas?In general: immediate playability. Consistent color coding (NI's own kits just use default colors, which annoys me).

Your main interests, industrial, glitch and chip tune (I'd like to merge the latter two) sounds are quite spot on with added raster-noton-esque touch, some kind of art-installation "subtly rhythmic background ambiences" form, Darker Than Dark Within Bloom and minimal d&b-ish.
Membrane Expansion will be in the form of an annual subscription with continuously added new free content and patterns within that year. Should you then want to continue the subscription for another year there will be a good deal offered.
Those above mentioned "styles/genres" is what I find the most interesting and challenging and pretty much sums it up in regards to what the focus will be.
Thanks for the interest.

Just using a semi-consistent color coding scheme, it doesn't matter what, to identify what kind of sounds are on each pad. It kind of goes hand in hand with placement.liv wrote:Would you care to elaborate your color coding ideas?
Example:

BitKits Kit 01: without even playing it, you could guess that kicks are on 1, 5, and 8, 2 is probably a snare and there probably aren't any other snares. 3 and 4 could be hats, and maybe 14-16 are other cymbals. 10 and 11 might be toms or something. (As it turns out, 14-16 are not cymbals but the rest is right.)
Vinyl1 SP1200: kicks are on 1, 5, 15 and 16. 2 and 6 are snares. 3, 4, 8 and 12 are hats. It's not clear what anything else is, but they're all kind of oddball one-shots so that's not too bad. (I'd personally have colored all the one-shots pink or something, to make them stand out.)
Funk Salad Kit: Good luck. (This is from NI's Transistor Punch pack.) Kicks happen to be on 1, 5, 9, and 13. Snares on 2 and 6. 10 is a clap. 3 , 4, and 8 are hats, 7 is a shaker that could be a hat in a pinch. 14's a cowbell, 15 a tom, 16 a one-shot, 11 and 12 are congas or something.
This is how I'd recolor it:

My personal scheme is:
Red = kicks
Green = snares
Yellow = claps, sticks
Blue = Hats
Darker blue = shakers etc.
Aqua = crashes, rides
Orange = toms & other semi-pitched percussion
Purple, pink = misc.

To NI's credit, all the kits of Transistor Punch have a consistent layout. But color coding would have made that immediately clear.
Electric Vice is more diverse and not so consistent, but color coding would have helped a lot. And the fact that only *some* Maschine expansions have consistent layouts makes you not expect it from the ones that do. (EV is a very cool pack though.

Nice.
Yes, there will be some form of color-logic worked out to the best of my ability. Many kits will not be the traditional kick, snare, hat, tom, cym so, we'll see where it ends.
Might dedicate one color for kick and one for snare. As there are many sounds included that don't fit in any typical category I might go for something like blue to red which would be from soft/mellow to hard/harsh and/or from low freq to high freq. Theres also the possibility to color-code for long and short sounds. This would all depend on the sounds in the kit.
I think that a logical form of mapping together with "color-logic" is the way to go. If the mapping is somewhat consistent but changes color I would like to think it is still logical.
I'll find a way.
Thanks for the input.
