Yep. I replaced the synth and that fixed the timing problem. The new version gives the track more variation in the groove. I also took the opportunity to ratchet things up towards the end. When I had completed the new mix and master I went back into the old project and managed to identify the cause of the timing problems. But I liked the new version much more, so didn't bother fixing the original. I'll replace the original track in a couple of hours.Frantz wrote:+ 1layzer wrote:i think its the timing of the gate that messes it up
I didn't mention it but I was also thinking this. The timing between the gated synth and the bass line is subtly out of sync.
Layzer: Very cool demo! Four on the floor kicks with a 16th note bass line really energizes that gated synth.
The arp at 4:39 in Recant has a similar energetic effect and could probably be featured earlier.

Thanks very much for taking the time to listen and comment, Matt. Glad you liked itpolyslax wrote:Some really interesting synth and percussion work in here Tim... and I love the bass parts. The 4:50ish arp lead is sweet too. Agreed with the fellas above that the timing of that riff made me a bit dizzy, otherwise,
I've changed the gate and added some corrosion. Just waiting for the SoundCloud transcoder to wake up.

HCl = Hydrochloric acid?seismic1 wrote:It's up. I replaced the original with the HCl remix
Well, the timing issue has been fixed. I think there's more movement in the opening gated synth but there's still not enough happening in the intro to hold my interest.
I'm not sure how much I like the two new sounds. They seem to make the track sound even more bassy.
I don't know what to make of this new version. I'll give it another listen tomorrow. I gotta work on my own stuff now.

Sounds awesome to me. Nice groove and great combination of smooth sounds. I particularly prefer darker sounds more than brighter "trebly" sounds, and smooth or "creamy" over harsh. Great work! Looking forward to listening to the final production.

I have had some time to absorb the new mix. The new version of Gated Synth1 does sound more lively.
I decided I like the new acid bass. It adds more energy to the ending at the risk of cluttering up the mix.
There is no timing issue with Gated Synth2 but I'm still unsure of its sound. I would have put both gated synths through phasers to thin them out and make them move more. I have a bunch of phasers: Phase Mistress, Fazortan, Big Rock, and the one that comes with Studio One. They all sound quite different from each other. I spend a lot of time experimenting with all of them.
Overall, I give the new mix a thumbs up.

Yeah. that timing had been bugging me for a while. Glad I got that sorted.
I added the new sounds to inject some different grooves into the piece. I thought the original was a little too static. They probably do conspire to accentuate the bassy aspects of the track. That bass emphasis definitely comes from the patches and levelling I used and not from any mastering/saturation/eq decision. This sounds ok on my monitors, and on the main system when played very loud.
Froth will be the next remix. I think that contains a less bassy mix of sounds, although I'm currently looking at boosting that a little. I think it might be that some of the tracks I'm currently reworking had more of a groove-based origin whereas earlier stuff was based on melodies and chordal foundations with the bass/percs added later.
Thanks for checking this out again, Frantz

I usually make brighter sounding tracks than this, but I thought that the tune was too jolly by half and decided to "bass it up" to avoid being accused of cashing in on the seasonal frolics. My next track might feature some bells
I'm probably going to leave this one alone for a while. I tend to work on tracks, leave them alone for 2-3 years, polish them up a little and then let the dust settle.

Well, looking forward to listening to more from you. I can relate, I sometimes leave my songs for a few years too before revisiting and "fine tuning".seismic1 wrote:Thanks very much for listening and commenting.
