Is music relevant?

Relevant is what we're making relevant. But I've experienced people around me who really don't listen to any music whilst I couldn't live without music. So it's not relevant for everyone.

Culturally relevant or not, which is a separate question, music is inherent in humanity. I went to a Christmas concert last night and in front of me was a family with a baby. The band started playing a blues song and the baby started bobbing up and down to the beat (as well as a baby can...). It wasn't old enough to learn what music was, but the idea is a universal one.

So, interesting musicians have a hard time breaking into 'the mainstream' today [because of blah blah blah]. That isn't really news to me.
And the keyword is 'relevant'? The mainstream isn't relevant to me. If I wanted to make money I would do music other than what I do, I would do things VERY differently. And I would expect it to be hard in the same quality as it was 35 yrs ago when I ended up carrying things from point A to point B for a living instead of sucking everybody and their dog's dick.

Life is short and I'm going to approach mine like it's going to run out soon so I please myself.

I saw a British series recently where the score was pretty Dubstep-oriented. It's normal, TV music always adapted like that to some degree.

I have some reservations as to many of the assumptions of then vs now. I lived then and I live now.

NO...in the sense that we've 'played out' 'the ear' (i.e., the choclea) which generates 'music' from the external chaos of noises!

we've 'heard' everything that can be produced by stones to electronics (i.e., stone carvings at a real fine scale)!

however, the 'hearing' has been through that damned mechanical contraption, the ear:

what we need to do to make 'music' (whatever that is...) relevant (again?) is to: jump around all that 'ear wax' and directly address the auditory nerves, or better yet, those areas of the brain that process the signals coming out of the auditory nerves!

but, then again, the 'hearing' is really 'in' the neural architecture, giving rise to, the neurodynamics of those parts of the brain (again...adapted) to process auditory nerve signals.

if you really want something fresh and new, you're going to have to undergo some brain surgery and perhaps a few computer implants!

in other words, to make music relevant (to the times?) we need to throw that crusty old God of 'the past' (evolutionary adaptation) out of our 'minds' (i.e., neurodynamics) and bring in our new GOD (computer algorithmics)!

Is music becoming irrelevant? Music is neither relevant or irrelevant - it's something human beings instinctively understand and are stimulated by without any tuition, prior knowledge or contextualisation. This is why babies respond to music without any concept of what music is. I can see what the writer's getting at in the article - which is badly titled - but it's not restricted to music. Our whole culture is changing (largely due to the internet) and we will adapt and begin to become comfortable with it eventually. As Alan Moore says '...our culture is turning to steam.'.

The guy is speaking about very specific questions like live music and annoying egocentric artists. These things may be dying indeed, but who cares? It's another time, and a completly different approach to otherwise simple things like listening music, reading, etc. if he's unable to jump the wagon, then it's not the audience fault.

Celebrity driven media has always existed. It's up to each one to focus on the music or on the personal life of the performer.

I listen music almost 24 hours a day. Most of the music I listen I don't have a clue who is the author, don't care about them and have little interest in see him live.

And I hate bars and malls with live music.

If we didn't have the arts with which to express our true emotions, most of us here would probably go crazy. And when I see my son react to music, there seems to some kind of fundamental experience there that's deeply wired into our being.
