Anyone know wot the synths were that were used on that album...please?
Cheers & marry Xnas,

Not sure about the synths yet but the best known tracks seem to be "What A Feeling" by Irene Cara and "Maniac" by Michael Sembello.
"What A Feeling" was done by Georgio Moroder so any synth of that time (around 1982/1983) could be possible. A good guess would be a Jupiter 8, Prophet 5 and maybe a DX7 (which was released 1983 so maybe not...).
I found that on the "Cat People" soundtrack in 1982 Moroder used: Synclavier II, Minimoog, Polymoog, Prophet 5, Roland Jupiter 8
For FM synthesis the Synclavier II seems to be more sophisticated than the DX7.
I got the (quite expensive...) Synclavier FM sample library from Enhus which is very nice: http://enhus.com/
The synths in this videos are hard to identify but i could spot a Minimoog being used:
In this one there seems to be a Jupiter 8 being used:

I used to play those regularly when still doing cover bands in the 70s/80s. I used a Memorymoog. But after my first born and making a decision to work in a music store again, my interview with that owner included me having to audition for him and I picked Maniac to play on a Roland Juno-60. The sound was stock in their programming. So my guess would be anything Roland from their cheapy Junos to their flagship Jupiter.

Here's a tip to ppl offering advice.... just because a song was released in 1983, doesnt mean they used synths released in 1983....its quite possible they used older ones

True, but it was much easier to tell which ones they were then, and polys were the necessity at that time. Bass synths were still often Moogs and the most proliferic of the mass produced for lower price points were Roland and Korgs. Obies, Prophets, Jupiters & Memorymoogs were not as common as people tend to think. Junos & Poly61s were just about everywhere and endorsements tended to make sure the mass marketed ones were always visable too. Now, DX7's were on a fairly tight waiting list in those days and although I sold many in '83, I didn't physically have one to display unil mid '84. They were limited by production and sold to those willing to pay over the MLP. (I bought mine in very late '84 with my store discount and SPIF bonus).Kriminal wrote:Here's a tip to ppl offering advice.... just because a song was released in 1983, doesnt mean they used synths released in 1983....its quite possible they used older ones
