greets to all!
after a period of about two+ years, i feel i am finally decent enough in my synth programming abilities etc
i started out using Reason but since then i have moved more and more away from it, preferring instead to use VSTs and modular environments and the like...
basically my question is: is it normal for me to want to totally move away from this program? i think it is a nice program, but for the way i work, and having used various other programs and the like, i just don't feel compatible with it...
so i am thinking to uninstall it although i could well afford (system resource-wise) to leave it alone...
is this normal? lurking here on KVR i notice quite a few ppl who seemingly go through every new synth and vst out there. does anyone semi-regularly 'update' their software as described?

Yup; with such a broad choice in hosts and plug-ins it is only natural to go out and find that which suits your personal needs and workflow best.
Rule #1 should be; enjoy what you like best best, whether 70% of the people use it or if only the odd person uses it. Music making should in the first place be about fun and enjoyment.

Heck, I bought XG Works as my MAIN tool of composing, and think I used it 3 times?
It's a great program, and handles MIDI and TG's and all that really well. But the ease of VSTi's and Orion et al...? I feel guilty in that I have all this hardware and software, and have resorted to just using Orion and a handful of 'free' synths and effects and samples offered here and abroad.
It used to be spending hours with patch cables on a modular system to get a bass, days with a DX7 to get a pad, months to map a bed spring into a Emu. All had their unique sounds and character - but now what one can do in Reason doesn't sound any different than what can be done in Cubase, that can be done in Orion and so on. It's really going back to 'music' as opposed to 'sound' these days I feel?
The cars might look different, but they're all on the same highway now. Find the model you're most comfertable with, put on 'cruise control' and enjoy the ride.

I agree, I think Reason is very well-designed program but to integrate it into a song is a pain. It works but I find it frustrating, I don't like the 'red-tape' that rewire causes (two copies of your song, launch and quit apps in an order, 2 song timelines, etc). I'll do it in some cases, but not for Reason.i think it is a nice program, but for the way i work, and having used various other programs and the like, i just don't feel compatible with it...
They should drop the sequencer and make it a VSTi rack, or make it a VST host and make the sequencer robust. toy-like is a bit insulting but thats the way I feel about Reason.
Mind you I know dance producers that use nothing but Reason and get good tracks made. For some people I think Reason really is "the best", it is a decent solution for synths/sampling and comes with good presets and samples.
My experience shows two types of Reason crowd- there's the power users which rewire it to Cubase, etc and use it to start tracks but never finish in Reason. Then you have the guys who don't consider the computer their primary instrument, and like Reason for getting their "beats and synths" for their songs. "it works just fine for my needs" is the type of thing I hear a lot of.
For many of us here at KVR, we don't consider "beats and synths" to be peripheral to the instrumentation- many of us use 90% or 100% "beats and synths" for our music.
I would pay $399 for the Reason modules as VSTi and VST FX.

it's been said, "you spend a fortune to take the noise out, then you spend another to put it back in." after host freedom, you want host limitations :p
in other words, ditto on havran, except your individual path might be a good thing to blot out and destroy if you want to sell music, then do what the robots do. course if you get all blotted out and destroyed as a result of that, that'd be humour.
