A KVR'r from possibly 10 years ago!!! Lol time flys

Hi All,

I need a favour of an old KVR'r....

My name is Adrian and I was once on here literally every day for about 5 hours as the Technical Support Manager for Time & Space. My time there gave me the privilege of working with some of the nicest people in the industry and at the same time having a helping hand in shaping some of the instruments we use today...

What do I do now and why the 10 year gap? I'm a teacher, I had an epiphany and changed my life, gave up the industry and went back to school to become a teacher which has been all consuming these last few year.

My Principal has givne me permission to teach Music Tech in school and we have raised some funding and I've bought 10 copies of Cubase Artist. It's been so long since I've immersed myself in to MT I don't really know what good and whats not anymore and I though seeing as I teach kids all day maybe someone could teach/tell me what is good?

Firstly I have no more funding left as Cubase wiped it out! I have 10 kids from the the poorest estate in the county so this is the only chance they will have at doing this sort of thing.

I teach MTech in the day to a group and then we run a free after hours club for those that want to attend.
To give you an idea of these kids, about 30% do NOT have a PC at home or the internet as their parents can't afford it

So, any advice or guidance would be greatly appreciated.

Poor kids without much computer experience and REAPER? I don't know if this goes well...

I'd rather buy something simple like Magix Music Maker or similar stuff...

what are you looking for?
instruments? other hosts?

also what country are you in? if the kids can find a copy of "computer music" then you get a load of great fx and instruments on the cover disc.

I would contact Image-line to get free copies of Fl Studio. I know that in the past they have provided free copies of Fl Studio to help under-privileged kids that are learning to make computer music. I can't promise anything but if you explain to them what you are doing, I think you may end up getting some free licenses...

We're in the UK, yeah I have CM so will be loading that up for them. As I said I have Cubase 7 and will teach from that as I've used it since the Atari days, also the edu pack was very reasonable in pricing.
I see Synth 1 is still around ;o) I'm just looking for instruments and hosts. I'm trying to get a little more funding for some controller keyboards as we only have old PSRs at the mo.

I'm looking through this comparison chart and I'm hard pressed to think of anything else that you might need or want. Cubase Artist comes with all the essential plugins, so why not just keep it "simple" (not really, though!) and stick with what you've got? Seems like you could easily spend a semester or two teaching them how the software works, project navigation and organization, audio vs. MIDI, synths vs. samplers, recording basics, how to use EQs and dynamics processors, sends vs. inserts, etc., not to mention some fundamentals of songwriting.

Maybe a better thing to consider is your MIDI controller, or soundcard/speaker needs?

What you probably don't know though is that Synth1 was updated in the meantime It got better

I do wish you'd have looked for a company sponsor before buying 10 copies of Cubase Artist though. I only say that because some companies love that kind of press and you - might - have gotten some if not all of your daw software for free. I mean, if a daw company gives away X licenses in a program, it's probably a tax write off of some kind, and they don't actually lose anything.

Maybe it's not too late to look into that.

Almost all major companies provide educational discounts, personally I would have asked ableton for Live licenses before getting cubase, since getting ideas flowing is much more easy.

But well now that you have done it maybe just teach the kids to use free soft synths.
