This is something I've been toying with for awhile...that being writing a bunch of songs with a narrative thread...

From up here

(I did some work with a guy on a really crappy indie film recently. The movie was very cheap, but between me and him, it sounded like a million bucks...so I thought, hmmm...with today's tech, a low budget musical could still have excellent production values...but I digress)

This one is an elaborate sketch I put together to get the main mood and feel of the thing...we'll see how far I get, eh?

The story is about a guy who has everything, but it all gets chipped away from him bit by bit until he gets killed accidentally...but being dead, he's free from the bad times that have been closing in on him.

(No, this isn't about me, so please, no interventions.)

This song would occur right after that, when he calmly walks away from his own dead body and goes and sits on a rock up in the hills to survey what's happened and reflect on his life, none of which means much to him now...so you get this nice little ditty of quiet freedom and quiet resignation.

So, the question: Is this anything?

dangerously enjoyable meanderings at the end there.

i hope you get a long, long way with this. it has a deliciously self-indulgent feeling that is often missing in today's music, and quite apart from that it's really good.
this statement is unprovable

Given the story, the words and the music; yeah I'd say this is the start of something indeed. I really loved how the music shifts through time from sharp and clear to haunting almost ethereal. Quite the expressive tune where I enjoyed that soft half-muffled electric guitar in the second part.

I concur with mark, this is very cool sounding..especially like the start of the guitar solo I think around 1:30..
hope you find a way of finishing it.

I'm with seldom on this (*). "deliciously self-indulgent" describes the second half of the song perfectly (that's good, btw).

The vocal sounds soooo much like a track that belongs in a musical that it's uncanny - it's perfect.

I vote that you keep going with the idea.

(*) what's the world coming to when a NZer and a Tasmanian can agree
nope...nothing!!

got a little ray davies in ya ...

the idea appeals to me ...
musically , you could take this almost anywhere ; key life events tied to concurrent stylee ...
you certainly have the chops to pull that off ...

Hah! Me too...the extended coda would actually be a bridge to another song or theme...so I don't know when it would.

I mean, look at Dick Wagner...he figured he'd write a little tune, and ended up with the whole Rings cycle...
got a little ray davies in ya ...
Is that a euphamism?

Haven't heard that one in a while...back when I was younger and faster I used to get this "punk Ray Davies" thing occasionally...big compliment though. Thanks.

Very nice, but where's the , 'he's gay, he's gay!' bits? And what was that f**king awful film musical 'a chorus line' or summat?

Nice song - but I'm not heaping any praise on you anymore because you obviously can sing and play better than me. :P On the other hand, you didn't sound as sure of what you were doing in that psychedelic part at the end. I know, that's why it's a sketch... I liked the guitar too and I like the arranging (almost goes a bit Jim Croce in parts)... Ha Ha - didn't see that coming! Oh, WTF, it's great - you're a genius; the Mike Stoller of our generation. Er, maybe the Lee Hazelwood of our generation.

For the love of Pete, please don't do a Broadway-style musical. If you start getting all Andrew Lloyd Weber on us, I'm not renewing my membership to the Sleek Month Fan Club.

Ooooh....helllllo! Broadway.

Actually I'm thinking a cross between Donnie Darko and Dancer in the Dark, but more rock. Our protagonist would be a band guy...a rock band guy...probably in something that's kinda punk, kinda danceable....maybe a bit more rock Franz Ferdinand or Interpol sound or summat.

Actually, the SMFC, (not to be confused with the SMUFC or SMCFC football clubs....), is a lifelong appointment, like being Pope. Only death can free you.

I really dig Franz Ferdinand. I feel much better now.

But what, pray tell, is the Intergalactic Eye? Galactic Eye, I can imagine. Did you just need the extra syllables or are you insane?

You should find a way to put that song in your musical too. At least the end of it. :)

I think it would begin as the cute ticket-boy tore my ticket and made a point of brushing my finger and looking into my eyes ...

but sure, do something with as much as an overview as anyone can muster at present ... with kindness and consideration toward anyone who is balancing galaxies and babies, or not ...
