Peter - IK Multimedia wrote:Like the word "ring" isn't used ANYWHERE else... Doesn't seem to be an issue for thousands of CES visitors so I think we may be a bit of the dirty minds club here and I openly admit I'm too quick to associate that sort of thing too, don't get me wrong.
It's not an issue, but it's certainly one of those unfortunate marketing things. It's like the Chevy Nova being sold in Spanish speaking countries - no one thought through a car name that translates as "Chevy doesn't go".

iRing is always going to be funny. Same as if you named a MIDI controller iKnob - the word knob is used everywhere, but you should really think through double-entendres and multiple meanings of words before settling on one. :hihi:

The iPad took off just fine despite its name. The actual use is what sets it apart, everyone using it at CES instantly get why it works and are able to use it very quickly. Its why iRing won CES Best of Show from iPhone Life.

I couldn't play songs with it. Imagining my hand would slip away just a mm, I'd trigger the false effect/sound, and the whole performance/show were spoiled. I'd rather use a touch screen if necessary.

It might be a nice toy for the beach or for a passenger in a car (on a 8-hour trip)

-- but for PRECISE playing, it's too difficult to fiddle around with it.

Yes, I also sometimes dream of you in only a stocking cap and socks too! Oops, I addressed the wrong thought there
openly admit it, as i said though peter i think it is a great idea and i wish you well with the product
were just having a bit of fun with you, no foul intended :)
Oh I understand [stealth mode]but the big bosses check here and I'm usually good at pointing these things out before release so please help a guy out![/stealth mode] ;)

I'll be sure to advise more closely before we announce iBalls at NAMM

Edit - and the Chevy Nova story isn't true (there was also and may still be a company that sells gasoline under the Nova brand too with success apparently) and it had no impact on sales, etc, for either company. http://www.snopes.com/business/misxlate/nova.asp ... I know some here may have liked to see this as a "brand blunder" or "marketing misstep" but unfortunately it really isn't and it seems to have gone unmentioned most places, even comments sections of some tech sites that I'd think we would have seen it if it were indeed an issue.

Post

I'll add that I had no idea the Nova story wasn't true, I was quite disappointed :( And I didn't mean to sound catty, I think it just isn't the slang term as much for a middle-aged guy raised in suburbia USA :)

Maybe this guy could have explained the reactions here :P

That's interesting but thinking about it I suppose it would be too big a blunder to make.

But the iRing story - that one is true... :hihi:

Yet everyone keeps talking about it. No, not in a negative way, not even making fun of the name, but in actual use it has created a ton of buzz internationally. Especially at this price point. iRing has a lot of people looking forward to what 2014 has to bring.

ill say again, the idea and the product are cool. were just having a bit of a laugh. and as the ipad was mentioned, i seem to remember quite a few mock ads regarding the name and feminine hygiene products.
were just having a laugh, not being negative in any way about the product itself :)
i certainly hope that this does well and inspires more new ideas :)

FWIW, its obviously been successful in terms of publicity, ni that its been mentioned on all sorts of not-audio-specific tech sites, from Gizmodo to The Register.

BTW, I'll just mention that I'll only want fairly reasonable royalties for the concept of 'iBlingRing', the 18 karat diamond-studded version aimed at the gangster rapper market.

Here's the MacMixing video that they did at CES. Wasn't difficult for them to get the hang of it with our app but I can't wait to get it in our other apps and there have been SDK requests but I can't discuss those directly :)

More and more pairs are choosing iRings instead of wedding rings to make crazy sound effects in their church... :o
