I've had success in promoting and selling my sound libraries. But I'm really wondering how to efficiently promote my ambient music! I've tried a lot of things: sending promo CDs to the medias, uploading my music on music sites like Soundcloud, myspace, etc. Creating my own DJ mixes and having my own podcast (Obscure Waves, which serve the purpose of promoting my music as well as other similar music I dig).

I know there must be a way to efficiently promote my ambient music. I've just haven't found it yet. Any hints?

make it good, it will promote itself by word of mouth.
too much actual promo makes it "new age" and nobody wants that!

check out "class war karaoke"
i was invited to be included on their monthly(ish) broadcast.
found some great stuff through them over the years, not necassarily ambient, but not mainstream.

Thanks, I'll check that. About new age: I think that there is an audience for that genre. Only problem being that it's probably not the audience that listen to my music!

there is indeed a market for new age, but who wants to show up in an ipod playlist after yanni while an insurance salesman is driving to a conference in a travellodge in milton keynes?

Dunno. If I make enough for beer, I'm willing to sell out!

What would be nice is a streaming service that was ambient 24/7, with a Web page playlist so you could get info on the current artist. If only I were rich...

If it's good enough, you could suggest it to Soma FM which has many ambient channels.

Personally I always prefer a theme, for example space music, or lounge music or dark wave or whatever. For example, when I listen to "Space Station" of Soma FM then I know what kind of songs to expect, same thing with "Drone Zone", I know that it's a darker, evolving ambiente music. What I don't like are ambient channels that play everything messed up. I want to get in a certain mood with ambiente music, I don't listen to everything experimental just to hear some effects...

Well, there's promoting of different kinds...

Getting your music out where it can be heard is definitely a good thing. People can't listen to what they don't know exists, so you have to do SOME marketing and promotion or you're just making music for yourself (not a bad thing, of course).

I think the total over-the-top saturate every market with ads ads ads, spam forums all over, and giant email blast kind of things is about as anti-ambient a mentality as you could ask for! Seems to work for disposable pop, though.

I'm sure there's a happy medium that involved subtlety and a touch of th infamous shameless self-promotion, but hnmm I have no idea what it is.
