I have a friend who swears by the audio technica 3035, a large dia. condenser. All I got is a sure sm57, a good all rounder, esp. for live work but not the best for studio recording of vocal or acoustic instruments,

I would like to use it for a hip hop and/or industrial project. I'll use it strictly for vocals.

Should I have a different mic for in the studio and live shows?? if so which for live which?

If you want a mic for both live and studio use,and bearing in mind the nature of the music genres you want to record, a SM-58 would probably be your best bet.

I would get an SM58 all over again for hip hop vocals.

It's what I have. It's sounds good for Hip hop vocals, and it's a great "budget" mic.

I have made a few hip hop beats and had MC's flow on them. The SM58 does a great job for the price.

I record the vocals with compression on them. It works for me.

-edit- I heard this one before... sounds really good... but I think it's $400 and definitely hear it before you buy it, if you end up wanting to check it out. We may not have the exact same tastes... http://www.kellyindustries.com/micropho ... e_nt2.html

-edit again- Ohhhhh it's been discontinued. Might be a couple left somewhere.. don't know...

You can pick-up M-audio Luna or Solara (spelling?) at an academic store fairly cheap. I got the Luna, its pretty cool (but then again I really don't know crap about mics, it just seemed the appropriate choice at the time to record 6 and 12 strings).

in that price range i find the Rode nt 1000 to be an excellant choice all round and its easy to get a warm and upfront vocal sound when close micing.I recently did comparison recordings against a neumann tlm 103 (3 times the price )and 90% of people couldnt tell the differance

for live use and a dirtier studio sound shure dynamic mics are fine and can take loads of physical abuse.

studio projects makes some nice stuff for that money. I am considering the C3 myself, but AKG has lowered their prices on the 414buls to 650 or so, so I will prolly just get that since its for piano..
