Alright, so I produce electronic music (but currently make nothing from it). I'm quitting my day job (say what you will, I'm young and single) and I'm downsizing, selling almost everything but my studio and office equipment.

I'm looking for a new place (monthly rent budget: ~$700) that will allow me to live minimalistically and yet offer me reasonable safety, hence an apartment seems ideal, rather than a house in the ghetto.

The problem is, my neighbors in the apartments won't like me making music with my speakers and subwoofer (and I can't be mixing on headphones all the time).

As fellow music producers, if one doesn't have a house, where does one produce music? Are there cheap spaces I can rent out specifically for the studio (to where I can live in a cheap place and work in a separate place)? What kinds of solutions have you guys found? I'm interested to know.

I've thought of the corner room in a townhouse approach (with a room that shares no walls or ceiling with anyone else), and that currently seems best, though it's much harder to find. Lemme know!

In Munich you wouldn't have any chance. Even a small studio apartment (bath room, living room + kitchen unit) costs more than $800/month...

Maybe you should say in which country you're living?

I have lived in apartments since 1977, my studio is in my home and I dont get complaints from neighbors at all. I think I have done myself a favor in being this way if not for any other reason is I do need music to be loud at this stage of my life and my ears are in great shape. Get yourself a cheap SPL meter, meet with your neighbors and come up with limits*.

Keep in mind you do not have to blow the roof off the house (not too mention issues created in small rooms when you turn it up too loud) nor will you have to be as quiet as you think. Keep in mind that the best thing for soundproofing is a room within a room and apartments can be rooms within rooms within rooms, however up and downstairs can be an issue. For up and downstairs keep your monitors and any other speakers off the floor, or make some iso pads, if you dont have carpet (which we dont, we have hardwood floors) put down some or a good size area rug (doesn't help with sound as much as it does if you drop something) and just be reasonable...it works

*you would be surprised how well neighbors take it if you approach them first, leave your spl in your apartment with someone to read, take a phone to their apartment. Have the person in your home turn up the music slowly while on the phone with you and let the neighbor tell you when it's too loud or getting loud. Take note of the spl meter and then use the spl meter to train your ears for the quieter environment. Happy you, happy neighbors, happy everyone...like I said it works for me and there is no doubt I have the potential to be evil loud if I chose to

Find someone that has what they call a Garage Apartment that is behind there house for rent . Which means only 1 apartment with a garage usually the apartment is above the garage . These would be an ideal situation for a musician , or rent a Trailor or mobile home .

What Hink said. Always be respectful of your neighbors. It simply isn't reasonable to live around other people and still expect to play your music as loud as you feel like. Learn to work at lower levels, switch off between headphones and monitors, and only listen at higher levels during the day when everyone is at work. As for rent? Around here, $700 won't even get you a cardboard box down by the creek.

Just in front of them ... about 8 miles. There's a petrol station / shop about 5 miles away.
