Long notes in Mulab

I noticed that when I record for instance a background pad chord that lasts for instance 15 seconds (like in Edward's and Garrett's Don't look any further :D), I have to set the start point of replay before the beginning of that chord when editing midi notes on other tracks towards the end of that long chord. If I set the start point during those 15 seconds, the chord is totally mute, which means I have to listen to the whole 15 seconds with every replay just so I can hear everything at 12 seconds into the chord.
Is that supposed to be that way? I have no idea what is considered the standard as other DAW's seem to handle it differently. In Mixcraft for instance the chord can be heard no matter where I set the starting point of the reply loop within those 15 seconds.

Gee, hard to explain, I hope you even understand what I am trying to say :D

Obviously there has to be a 'note on' midi message to hear the note or you could render that note to a wav, mute the original and use that wav temporarily

Yes, maybe the other DAW registers such note-on events in the background, otherwise the note would not sound when I put the progress somewhere within rather than before that long note bar in the MIDI editor and start replay from there...

I know what you mean fluffy. But imagine the long note is some ritmic sound/sample or a voice or... and then you hit it in the middle and then the sound would start at the start, then things would be out of sync. So it depends on the sound whether it would be good or bad if the note starts playing in the middle.

Judging from your post I am no so sure you know what I mean. Let me put it another way:
I consider a DAW a digital software version of an analog multitrack tape machine. No matter where you jump to and start to play the tape, you will hear everything that has been recorded at the location, including long pad chords that started 10 seconds before the point where you press play. The only way to keep that chord from sounding is by muting that track.

Nor would there be any sync problems. What I described for Mixcraft for instance means that when I have recorded a 15 second chord and start playback at 5 seconds into that chord, the chord actually sounds only for the remaining 10 seconds, not the whole 15. It does not start when I click the play button, i.e. shifted and out of sync by 5 seconds.

Yes i think i understood well.

Using wavs (temporary or otherwise) would give you what your after

Same problem here. I often improve small pieces of a track by lopping them. And e.g. a long lasting crash cymbal note one or two bars before that loop will start from the sample start every time the loop starts again. Of course it will sound different while playing the whole song. Yeah, the sample should not start at the beginning in that case, I think.
