Countdown to Sample Tank 3, with 64 bit support

I prefer the old retro-like GUI, with the big fake screen (a la Trinity-Triton). For me it would have been enough to find the same nice interface, only expanded (double sized) and 64 bt compatibility. In the IK forum Peter explained it was not possible, because of stability issues. Well, as far as I can see, ten years after we have the same 2.5 instrument but with a different GUI and 64 bit + some new effects and a "buy" button?! I mean, this new "three pages" GUI could be useful if ST3 was a sampler, but it isn't. It remains a rompler, more similar to Omnisphere or Nexus. In ST3 case, more oriented to "General Midi" and "Bread and Butter" presets. The "Apple-Like" big images of the various instruments and the channel strips can be "impressive" (not to me, though), but don't change anything in terms of results (I can obtain the same sounds in ST2). I wished ST3 could import samples and become a sampler, that would have been real good news, ten years after. On the contrary, I can see "30 gb of material" and the grey and red "zones" on the keyboard... in a "oversized" era in which you can see even the simplest sampled instruments for Kontakt (e.g. kalimbas, music boxes, whistles etc.) come with absurd "3-4 GB size 24 bit". Ok, this is not IK's fault
It is just a "bigger means better" syndrome.

Well, the fact that there is a MIDI library included is new.
And, I presume, the presence of a MIDI library means that MIDI can also be created, manipulated and extracted from within the program, giving it beatbox capabilities.
I posted on the other ST3 thread that I first acquired ST2XL in 2004 for $339 USD. I then purchased it again within the next year as part of the T-Racks/Amplitube/ST bundle. I got it again (boxed) with another group buy deal the year after that. Two years later, I got it again (download) in one of the infamous group buys, and probably in the two years after that, I got it at least twice more in various group buy options.
I would hope that qualifies me for a steep upgrade discount. But you never know.
Cheers

ok gang!!! earlier in this thread i used the phrase "strung along"... there were some who said... "strung along... who is getting strung along... no one is being strung along..." remember? i do!!! now lets look at the facts... end of Nov... we were still on track for a 2013 release... remember? i do!!! at that point we were questioning pricing... remember? i do!!! next ik multimedia had "unseen-ed" problems with the 2013 release of ST 3... then was "hyped" into the NAMM showing/release... remember? i do!!! NAMM is here but still no pricing information... i am not sure what the rest of you guys/gals think what being "strung along" means... if you were waiting for pricing/release during NAMM... you were "strung along"... right? maybe?
this is just for the record... by the way!!!

If there's a decent upgrade price and I can use my jam points to bring it down to around $50, then I'll probably go for it. If it's significantly more than that then I probably won't.Rajah wrote:dexterbella wrote:I really hope these 'unofficial' screenshots aren't telling the whole story! Sure there's a bigger/better sample library, 64 bit, more fx and a fresh lick of paint (all very welcome) but ultimately a bit underwhelming considering how long the wait has been.
I was hoping to see a lot more added to the functionality of ST - more flexible modulation, more LFOs, more envelopes (including possibly MSEGs), arps, step sequencers, possibly even Korg KARMA style phrases etc etc...
I guess there's still more details to come but, as it stands, ST3 looks like it might sound better than ST2 but not really be capable of doing much more - I was really hoping for much more of a workstation rather than just a rompler. Hope I'm wrong.
I was hoping to see stuff like that also... Maybe in the next update (in about 10 years)...
Ah well, Let's see what Alchemy 2 has to offer...
I may pay $49. for this Sampletank 3 upgrade..

Hmmm. I am undecided at this point.
Since I have T-Racks, Amplitube, etc, I don't see the advantage of having them within ST3.
I am going to have to wait and see as more comes out onto Youtube, and here. As I've mentioned earlier, I've invested quite a bit to replace my IKM VI's since Logic X came out.
Possibly, I'll just make do and wait for ST3 Free. Could be a long wait, I guess, but just about everything will depend on the upgrade price they are going to charge me. Since I haven't owned these VIs since their release, I'll get the smaller discount, and if it doesn't suit, I'll pass.

This kind of sums it up really - I think a lot of us feel this way. This is a good update but, considering the wait and the strength of the competition, it is lacking in 'wow'. A bit more 'wow' and we'd all be a lot more interested in the release date than the upgrade price.Bombadil wrote: just about everything will depend on the upgrade price they are going to charge me

I have to agree with this....the price will determine whether or not I buy in cause given the long wait for 64 bit and then having to buy another product to get that feature, well, I have moved on to other things.dexterbella wrote:This kind of sums it up really - I think a lot of us feel this way. But I am curious dexterbella, genuinely, what wow factors would have made it a no brainer for you (and others) to make the buy?
I'm not getting WOW! either from what I've seen, but really can't say what I would need to see to feel WOW!

Well I've always thought of ST more like a Korg workstation than a rompler and that's kind of where I was hoping ST3 would go. As I put in a previous post I would have liked to have seen lots more modulation options and onboard arps, step sequencers etc. I am particularly disappointed with the 'edit' page - the same 2 LFOs and 2 envelopes (with hardwired destinations) as we've always had, the same macro buttons (still not user defined it seems), basically the same 'synth' functionality as before. I really expected a lot more in terms of functionality as well as improved samples, fx and GUI.dsan@mail.com wrote:But I am curious dexterbella, genuinely, what wow factors would have made it a no brainer for you (and others) to make the buy?

Based on the little information we have so far:
Yeah, it appears that the editing abilities haven't advanced much. I'm not sure one really needs much more in a workstation, but it's a tad underwhelming. I understand that it's a complete rewrite which takes a lot of time to do. Yet I have the feeling it's a missed opportunity to really advance ST as an instrument.
The effect lineup is pretty impressive, though.
I guess if we look at it as an isolated product it's probably going to be pretty usable. As a successor to ST2 it's not that impressive so far, feature wise.
Don't get me wrong, I'm sure IK have put a lot of work and love into the product. The few sounds I've heard so far were quite nice.
I'm curious about the update price, too.

It's cool and I will likely upgrade but it's kinda weird that you can't create simple patterns (like the iOS 4 track version) for quickly capturing ideas and basic songwriting. I mean I use Sampletank in standalone when playing live sometimes (layering and combis) and for going through patches for inspiration at times and saving a pattern without having be in DAW would be awesome. With the long wait and all what's up with the IK reps not know pricing? I like IK's products and Sampletank is why I left hardward so I have a long love and history for it but I struggle to understand their methods.

March, April release date.... OK..................... By then I've had Logic Pro X with no sampleTank use around for eight months or so.
