Daft Punk are the only winners with helmets but some soul...

I wish Calvin Harris would have won. At least he has some funny lo-fi elements in his music, not only boring 4-to-the-floor EDM music or boring Lorde pop music...

He goes a bit commercial now but he still makes music where you can recognize, ah, this could be Calvin Harris...

Couple of more things:
1. Are Queens of the Stone Age really a thing? I always put them on the same level as GWAR when it came to respectability, and yet, there they are on an all-star stage with the Foo Fighters, etc. I know they've got considerable history with Dave Grohl, but still.

2.Too much country? I know that this genre has always been a force to reckon with in the US (after the adoption of Sound Scan, recall the 'shock' of the really hip to discover that Garth Brooks was outselling all the major rock acts by a wide margin). But even so, it still seems like there's a disproportionate amount of country on display. One theory, perhaps, is that this particular audience still buys it's music on actual CD's, which may disproportionately affect the accounting throughout the retail chain. Or something like that.

That "Get Lucky" song is a complete throwback to 70s disco but you've got to admit Daft Punk's stage look is completely original. No one ever thought of doing electronic music wearing helmets before.....

No one except French electronic band Space who had the same look in the 70s.

I think lyrically Country music appeals to Americans much more than other countries. There's still that yearning for the American Dream and the perfect country that everyone has at the back of their minds, and I think country music helps people to forget exactly how far away most of us are from that. It has barely changed in style in the past 30 years and that seems to be the way that people like it, so they're sticking with it.

Well, country music is for US people what folk music is for German people. It's a music where people can dream of a farm, some cows and happy sunshine...

But there are a lot of country music fans in (especially rural) Bavaria, too. They usually make western shows in their farms and dream of Texas. I had those neighbors in Regensburg; they were costumed as American Natives AND cowboys/cowgirls (how can both - American Native and cowboy - fit together?) and celebrated in a shed while some guy was playing a HORRIFYING country music (every song on 95.9 The Ranch FM was great compared to this stuff).

One street further there were some other guys & gals who had a small "Western Show Town":

And they're mostly the same people who expect to be millionaires some day and vote Republican to protect their future fortunes which they will never have... bleh.

I like some occasional Appalachian stuff where you can still get a whiff of the Celtic roots, and some alt-country (like Old Crow Medicine Show and Crooked Still) that branches off from there as if Nashville country-pop-fusion-whatever never happened. (And most of the O Brother Where Art Thou? soundtrack, for that matter.) Not one song about pickup trucks or flag-waving.

I'm not a country fan at all but I have some sympathy for Bluegrass & some experimental country music bands like Big & Rich..."save a horse, ride a cowboy"...

There are some great places in the mountains where you find a lot of that kind of thing - we're heading to Gatlinburg in western NC next month, but if we drive around a little I'm sure we'll find some great music somewhere. Been to places where they just have acoustic music without a steel guitar in sight, and you get a lot of stuff played in banjo, dulcimer, mandolin, or even things like accordion or bagpipes. Far better than that sterilized 'vote Republican' shit.

She's just another mediocre pop act but everywhere you look over here you're bombarded with her image from every direction just because she's doing big things in America, sick of it!!!

Woohoo!! I'm also a kiwi and feel exactly the same way. I hate living in a small country as this shit happens all the time. Someone is successful at something and the hype goes through the roof here. Seems like we're so bloody desperate to be noticed. It's embarrassing and Lorde is nothing special at all as far I'm concerned. I am happy for Joel Little however as I feel he has probably put in the hard yards and more importantly, he isn't annoying as hell.
