I grew up with this song, it was always on the radio in the 70's, by Lillebjörn Nilsen, who translated the lyric to norwegian:

He was born in the same decade as Woody Guthrie, so he had been around for some time

A serious assessment of his life and work unfortunately belongs in another KVR forum. But at least one can acknowledge that of those musical artists and cultural figures who achieved international recognition he was one of the few who seemed to always place the cause before himself.

Wow, such sad news. My parents were very much into folk music when they were younger, and the very first concert they ever took me to as a child was Pete Seeger and Odetta performing at Stanford University. It made a tremendous impact on me, and most likely launched my interest in playing music myself.

A bit of trivia:
Along with Paul Robeson, Pete was also involved in a concert which led to a riot in Peeksill, New York in 1949. The riot took place along a road directly in front of my grandparents' house. Despite protests from the neighbors, my grandparents brought injured riot victims into their home to care for them. My 13-year-old father was instructed to stand guard on the front porch with a shotgun in case the rioters turned on them. My dad has spoken several times about that day, and how it taught him that sometimes it takes enormous courage to stand up for what you know is right. In that respect, I have enormous admiration for both him and for Mr. Seeger.

I just saw the news and didn't realize he wrote so many songs I've been singing all my life. 94 is a good long life. He is one for the ages.
