Amazing..! Attila, you have done fabulous stuff here; thank you so much for your work (and to Yellukhan, Como Baila and dsan for all the discussion/suggestions/ideas/input leading to this update).

What a great forum..! The weekend can't come soon enough (won't get to play til then... )

Regards,
thebutler

You are welcome! Yes, this is a great forum with so many creative people! I am impressed by all the original ideas and suggestions, and since RapidComposer was created for you (not for me as I have not much time to play with it :( to my biggest sadness ) I will gladly implement new features that make your lives easier.

The beta URL is the same as the download URL, only "beta" is added before ".php" so that it ends with "...beta.php". If you write me an e-mail, I'll send you the links. The beta is built only for Windows and only for full version owners so this is not a public beta that anyone can download.

[EDIT: I also tried with RC v2.5.5; same issue.]
This statement caught my eye tonedef71, and I wanted to point out the problem may be with UAC and permissions.

If UAC is enabled it does not like software accessing the root of the C drive. It is best to place the folder inside a folder that has proper permissions, like your user account folder. (where RC installs itself - personally I have just left the location of anything RC related as the default location).

You may not encounter this issue if you move the phrases to other than the C drive, like an external for example. I haven't tested this theory.

Alternatively you may be able to give permissions to the C drive but I caution to be certain you know what you are doing with this. Especially if you are network and internet connected.

Hi there thebutler. That was very kind of you. Thank you for your compliments!

I wanted to point to another great contributor too, Chris Caulder, aka themixtape. Chris devoted a lot of time and energy creating multiple videos that, IMO, really got the ball rolling for Rapid Composer and generated a lot of excitement for this forum. If you get stuck in RC, look for his instructional videos inside the forum.

The real unsung hero though is Attila. Without his innovation, ingenuity and genuine interest we would not have such a great piece of software.

With contributions like those of ComoBaila, yellukhan, Chris and many others that have submitted their ideas and with Attila's willingness to make RC even better, I see nothing but great things happening for Rapid Composer down the road.

Thanks again for your contribution. It is nice to know we have somehow, in our own small ways, assisted another in this fantastic hobby ;)

musicdevelopments wrote:Hi tonedef71,

although I could not reproduce this issue (tried using the same directory on Win8 and Win7), a fix was added to make sure that the program exits from the loop when reading phrases.

The latest beta is available now (v2.56b2) with this fix.
Please let me know if it still does not work.

Thanks,
Attila
Hi Attila:

I downloaded and installed the latest beta but the issue remained: Image

I followed another poster's suggestion to try a folder under the "C:\Users\MyUser\AppData\Roaming" folder, but it made no difference.

On a lark, I decided to re-download the sample content from the link that I received in my e-mail. I unzipped the sample phrases into the custom folder and RC loaded them just fine. So now I am thinking that the custom phrases got corrupted somehow.

You can download a ZIP file of a bunch of them from here so that you can fortify RC to better handle the possibility of corrupt phrases without the application locking up.

Hi tonedef,

Thank you for uploading the phrases. This way I was able to reproduce the problem.
So now I am thinking that the custom phrases got corrupted somehow
This is exactly what happened! The phrase files are actually text files, but at the beginning 24 additional bytes were inserted, and the end was truncated.
Now I added a sanity check when loading phrases/scales/chords because RC should not lock up.

How the files got corrupted is a mystery. I am almost sure that it was not RC that wrote bad files.

Thank you for your help!

Thank you for adding the sanity check logic. When RC skips over, or is only able to partially read, a data file that it was trying to load, do descriptive messages get written out to a log anywhere? If not implemented already, such a feature might help someone, for example, to diagnose why some newly added phrases did not import into the phrase browser, or why a composition might be missing bits and pieces.

As to the file corruption, I have a theory. Over the past weekend, my PC had locked up after I accidentally bumped the USB cable of a connected external drive, and the laptop froze up; the USB cable or USB 3.0 port may be dodgy. Really bad timing for that to happen as the PC just happened to be running a disk defrag utility! I had to cycle the power to restart. Running chkdsk corrected some minor problems, but I am only now beginning to assess the possible casualties of that event.

I am wondering now if my RC data files had been corrupted before the unfortunate incident with the RC uninstaller -- I am not sure; I had not started up RC yet this week before I ran that uninstaller. The deleted RC data files that I "recovered" with an undelete utility all seem to be corrupted, although that could also be caused by the OS overwriting the files's data blocks after they had been deleted.

Yes, I am afraid you did... There can still be minor bugs left in the beta.
I fixed this bug and a new beta version was uploaded (v2.56b3)

Thanks yellukhan for reporting it!

Attila,
I'm noticing that when I have RC in full screen mode and I click in the timeline, the bottom portion gets shortened. The Window size notification (top right "- minimize, Box - maximize and X close" ) show as if the window is full screen. So if I click the maximize button the window resizes to small and then click again it maximizes to full screen. UNTIL I click the timeline again.

This is a Vista machine. My monitor resolution settings are 1440 x 900 (which is default for this monitor). I tried a different setting (1280 x 1024) and get the same reaction when clicking in the timeline.

Let me know if anything else I can provide you.

Thanks!

Hi dsan,

thanks, I did not realize that. This bug was fixed today. I think I managed to find all places that changed the window size, so full screen mode should work well now.

Thanks!
