I was up late last night playing with it...kinetic that is It's very easy to use and the sounds are awesome. I like the way that you can create groups of ptterns and sounds, then sequence those together.
Rewired to Sonar with no hitches. The Groove synth (roland) pluged into Project5.

How is the CPU usage?

When i tried Project 5 a while ago it almost killed my computer even though it did´nt sound all that good. So i hope they have optimized this one better.

CPU usage can range from low to high depending on the plugs/patches you select. Teh roland synth is not all that CPU hungry, but since you can have up to 16 synths running at once it will start eating cycles pretty quickly if you have efx on the channels and they are all PSYN channels.

If you disable some tracks and use it as a compositional tool you will be fine.

can it export midi ? the step sequencer sounds like my cup of tea but i take it it doesnt host vst itself

I've been using it for almost 2 weeks now, and I find it to be very productive for starting out projects with. Plus, it's very fun to use.

The Roland synths are biased towards techno/electronic/hip hop sounds, but you'll still find a few bread-and-butter instruments in there (and a handful of decent drum kits).

It does not have a MIDI export function, but Sonar and Project5 users can import the pattern files it creates.

It can patch in VST effects as-is, but you need Project5 to get it to host VSTi synths (i.e. it is able to load Project5 Track Patches). In that sense, it really is a nice add-on tool for Project5 owners because it gives them a new arrangement tool. Some users who do not have Project5 were able to get track patches for common VSTi synths by asking other users on the Cakewalk forums, and that seemed to work out well.

MIDI remote control is particularly good -- it does a few things that I haven't seen before. For example, triggering grooves via MIDI messages (with variable sync settings) and muting/soloing parts in realtime are both pretty fun to work with.

The biggest difference between Kinetic and other sequencers is that you can record your song arrangement by triggering pre-programmed grooves in realtime. This allows you to arrange songs in a more "live" manner, and you can go back and record synth and track automation in realtime as well. Note that I haven't use Ableton Live, so I'm not sure how it compares to that sequencer.

Regardless, I have found this to be a very rapid way of composing songs that are pattern-oriented in nature (e.g. techno songs). It probably is of higher value to me because I am a Project5 owner -- Kinetic makes for an amazing scratchpad, while Project5 is excellent for finishing up songs in great detail.

Overall, the product is of high quality and very stable (no crashes or bugs that I have seen yet). CPU can get high depending upon your machine, but, as mentioned earlier, parts can be bypassed to free up resources.

I'm running a 1.4 Pentium Processor with 512 MB of RAM.

With 16 channels running simultaneously in Kinetic Simultaneously (which I imagine counts as 16 synths), I was at 60% CPU. ReWired to SONAR with an 16 track audio project, that jumped to 70%

My CPU Usage went way down when I upgraded from Project5 1 to 1.5, you may want to try it

Well, the sounds do tend to gravitate towards the electronic side of things, but ther are some "acoustic" tones. It's definitely not a general MIDI module.

I'm not sure what you mean by Rompler.

You can export MIDI patterns that can be used in SONAR or Project5. You can save your projects and open them in Project5. I've learned that you can get it to open project5 track patches, which allows you to use vstis. I bet if I created a track patch for the RGC midi out, I could use it with an external synth...I'll have to try that
