What program do people recommend for converting wav files to MP3 on a PC...
Once converted do they need to be compressed to send in an e-mail?
Free is good, buy cheap is OK also

There really is only one choice: LAME
Either command line or with the RazorLAME GUI front-end.
Download LAME here:
http://mitiok.cjb.net/
Download RazorLAME here:
http://www.dors.de/razorlame/index.php
All of it free.
If you wanna rip CDs to MP3, use Lame with Exact Audio Copy:
http://www.exactaudiocopy.de
Also free.

Oh, almost forgot.... one shortcoming of RazorLAME which occasionally bugs me is that it doesn't have right-click shell integration (right-click wav file, convert to mp3). For that, you can use dbPowerAmp Music Converter, which can use LAME and several other codecs (and is also free):

I provided the link above.iDavid wrote:Where do you find it and why do you love it???Mighty_Hero wrote:I use poweramp and LOVE it!!!
And my guess is he loves it because it's free, has support for tons of codecs, and has right-click integration. It's good. RazorLAME has more complete access to LAME's functions, but is modestly more time-consuming to use. Which one I use depends on what I'm doing.

I use to download several different evaluating versions of mp3- converters, they work 10 conversions each usually, and they work fine. Do so you to, save munny!

No need when all of the best MP3 conversion software is freeware, and much of it open-source.qa2pir wrote:I use to download several different evaluating versions of mp3- converters, they work 10 conversions each usually, and they work fine. Do so you to, save munny!

If converting cd's to mp3 I usually just use winamp.
For other purposes I like LAME.
