Does anyone have any idea how one would go about getting their drums to sound something like "Watcha Want" by the Beasties? A similar sound can be found in "99 Problems" by Jay-Z. Is it a particular snare sound? Or is it a snare with reverb + distortion + compression?

Never mind. I re-read the question.

I find OnePingOnly to be rather limited.

smart-asses :P

I believe they used a bunch of refrigerator boxes connected together to make a big long cardboard tube. They put the kick on one end and mic’d the other end.

You could try to find an impulse file to get the same reverb effect.

I've actually been trying to get the organ sound from that song.

My guess is a live snare originally, with the signal fed thru a slightly distorted amp turned way up, mic'd, then compressed and eq'd. Possibly a noise gate pre-compression to gate the original live reverb. And they had really good engineers working on that album, which goes a long way. 8)

Of course, there's all sorts of ways to get a similar sound using digital fx, but that album used lots of live bits, real amps, etc in addition to digital processing.

Thanks, boys...I think that gives me several useful starting points. Now all I need are those good engineers that they worked with :)

Actually, I think they recorded the entire album in a DIY studio. I think they along with their keyboard player engineered alot of it themselves.

What!!! Definately live drums, and no Ohm Force.

Trying to remember the sounds on "Watcha Want" without listening, I'm sorta reminded of the big "Moby Dick" (Zep) reverb sound, but then smooshed through compression/distortion. In that case, yeah, something like PredatOhm or CamelPhatPro could do the job.

Then again, I'm old and my memory is shot.

EDIT: As proof of bad memory, I was actually thinking of Zep's "When the Levee Breaks". Duh. :P You can get a sample of the loop here: http://www.rah.gq.nu/bourbon/

Yes - Predatohm! I'd use it on the Bass and Vox too

Actually that album was engineered and produced by mario caldato jr. Mario C was their control room guy and the Beasties worked with him on mic placement, etc. That song is indeed the beasties playing live, then chopped up and sampled. You are hearing Mike Ds cheap tama drum kit. I think that they used SM57s for the bulk of their micing, and ran it through some sort of distortion /lofi effect. I know the beasties were fond of the roland space echo tape delay/reverb.

No way - this track was made a LONG time before Predatohm was around
