hi, i have just started using DarkWave Studio (64-bit) i'm on windows 7 x64. how come i can't hear the sound? do i have to add something?

Post

It's hard to tell without more info. What have you set up and tried? What plug-in(s) were you using?
What audio output is used under View > Options?

(I haven't tried Darkwave in a long time so I had to download it again.)

Just messing with it again right now I was reminded how I was never able to hear anything without turning up the faders on the mixer (not sure why they default to such a quiet level).
As much as I dig lite and simple DAWs I never really got along with Darkwave. Too clumsy for my tastes. If I had to go free, I'd likely choose Podium Free.

i have tried these plugins basehead plugins, mixer control change mapper plugin, midi out/inputs. the options are default settings also i used. what plugins do i need?

Post

As long as a mixer is connected to the master and an instrument (like BassHead) is connected to the mixer (or even straight to the master), once you go to the Pattern Editor tab and select the instrument in the first (far left) drop-down menu, then finally clicking the "+" to add a sequence you should hear the sound of that instrument when you click the on-screen keyboard, paint notes or play on your MIDI controller keyboard (if you have one).

There's certainly not that many instruments to choose from in Darkwave. It's nearly impossible to tell someone what plug-ins to get. There are many freeware softsynths, drum machines, samplers, effects and the like that you can find right here in the KVR database.

It seems like I recall trying the 64-bit version on my Win7 64-bit laptop and having issues. Try the 32-bit version of Darkwave.

What amount of experience (if any) do you have with this whole computer music thing?
I ask because I can end up telling you a bunch of what you already know or babbling on about stuff which you have no idea what I mean. :)
(I remember how incredibly confusing everything was when I was a complete newb to this, even though I'd played bass for fifteen years prior and was fairly comfortable with computers. Ten yeas later I'm often still confused. :D )

i still can't seem to connect the basehead to the mixer to the master. this is a issue not resolved. where is the MIDI controller on realtek driver anyways?

how do i connect plugins to the mixer?

Post

Ah.

(When I said MIDI controller I mean the piano-like keyboard that is hooked up to a computer to control software instruments.)

Ok.
In the Studio section of Darkwave, bring up a Mixer. Click and drag from the Mixer's Out to the Master's In (there will now be a blue line that remains to show they are connected).
Now load up a BassHead (for example) and click-drag from BassHead's Out to the first Mixer In.
Then you should be able to go to the Pattern Editor, choose the instrument from the far left drop-down menu, add a sequence with the + sign and play/paint the notes for this specific sequence.

how do i save the audio to a file? i have figured out how to connect the plugins

Post

Do you understand how patterns work in the Pattern Editor and how to build with the sequences of those patterns in the Sequence Editor?

You save a project as a project file by clicking on the disk symbol at the top.

As far as recording a project, unfortunately I'm actually not certain how the HD recorder works having never bothered with it. I just messed around with it a minute and it didn't work how I expected so it's not intuitive to me. There's likely some YouTube video out there that may explain that as there are a few vids on how to get started with Darkwave in a very basic way.

yes i do understand how it works. just don't know about how recorder works

Post

Okay.
In the Studio section there are two HD Recorder machines (mono and stereo) in the 'Native' list. You'll need to hook one of those up either to the mixer Out or each individual instrument to the HD Recorder and HD Recorder to the Master if you're not using a mixer (in which case you can use the faders that appear on the triangles of each line).
Then, in the HD Recorder section, click on the disc symbol to name the file (first, for some reason). Then, go to the sequence editor and click Record Song.

thanks for your help. I'm just newbie at this too. :D

Post

another thing too. how do i input the sequence? also i don't see the sound recording in the recorder. what did i do wrong?

p.s. i have put these plugins.. midi controller -> basehead -> hd recorder -> mixer -> master.

Post

No problem. :) Like I said, even though it's been a decade, I recall how confusing it all was at first.

When you say "midi controller" do you mean the Darkwave MIDI Input? You would only need that if you have an external MIDI controller keyboard. Like this:
Image

BassHead Out to Mixer In. Mixer Out to Master In. Mixer Out to HD Recorder In.

Go to the pattern editor, select BassHead from the drop down menu on the left. Click the "+" to add a new pattern. The length of the pattern is on the right (default length is 16 steps). You can change the note length by dragging the edges of the note or the note length selection on the upper left.
To add a new pattern click the "+" again (which will be called "Pattern 2") and so on and so on.
Go to the Sequence Editor and click on the instrument/track (this will give you all the patterns for that instrument in the pattern selector above that you've made in the Pattern Editor). Then go to the pattern selector and choose which pattern you wish to add to the track, then click the area of the track you wish to add the pattern to, etc.,etc.
When you want to record, go to the HD Recorder tab and click the diskette symbol to add a file. Name the file. Then go back to the sequence editor, click record and the HD Recorder will record what it plays.
Is that more clear?

Darkwave really needs a manual or at least a quick start as I've seen so many newbies who can't really even get started with it.
