Hello,

In DAW’s to record midi of a VSTi, one arms the record button, hits record on the transport then play the midi keyboard and you get midi data recorded on the midi track.

Simple but why not the same to recorded audio? I would like to see the same method used to record midi to be use to record audio, like this:

What is wrong with this? What am I overlooking? If one chooses each VSTi to have two tracks one midi and one audio. Why is it not done this way?

You have to render it as an audio track or freeze it

This is not a question on how to record audio.

I am simply asking why cannot recording audio be done in the same manner as recording midi on an instrument track. How illegal or illogical is it?

Just route the output of your midi track to an audio track and hit record?

I don't think this works in Studio One. As far as I know, you can only directly record MIDI of a VSTi and render the audio afterwards. If you want to record the audio of a VSTi live as its playing, the workaround is to route the output out of the computer and back into the computer via a cables.

No they added it a while back after many FRs. Tracktion can do this too now, afaik the only DAWs that can't now are Sonar and Orion, not sure about Cubase though.

For some plugins this is the only way to record as they don't output midi, for example many plugins that generate soundscapes or use algorithmic techniques such as some Reaktor ensembles. I also like to use this method as I like my music to capture my spontaneity and little accidents and find automation has its limitations.

There is a cost though in that for many plugins you can render at higher quality in offline mode so it's not always the best option if you want the best sound.

Thanks. I was trying to see if this was possible in Studio One last week. I saw all the complaints in the Presonus forum but didn't see posts saying the feature was added.

I do this way most of my demos, record it and forget it, that's why Sonar sucks a little bit, because you can't do it directly like in logic or other DAWs.
At the very beginning you can see me rerouting instrument to audio track.

This certainly works for me, I think it's standard, don't see how it would change for different Colour Themes (for example). Reaper is just *so* flexible in these terms.

Let me recap:

In any DAW, IMHO the ideal situation for a virtual instrument is to have the midi track and an optional audio track (by default or settings). Record either or both. Very quick.

Very simple. No manual to read on how to set up a bus and how to route to be able to record the audio from a virtual instrument. The only routing necessary is the midi channel.

I am not espousing getting rid of audio tracks. The audio routing for an audio track can still be used for more complex scenarios. If one wants to set up a bus then route the audio they still will be able to do that.

I suspect that there must be something I am overlooking as there seems little support for my proposition. Oh well, such is life.
