I may be moving from the United States to New Zealand, and I'm wondering if I will be able to bring my computer over as airline luggage, and simply buy a new power supply in New Zealand which will work with their voltage system and safely power my computer. Anyone have info on this?
I would like to take my monitors over also, but I suspect that using simple voltage converters may be unsafe, and I don't want to risk destroying a 1000$ pair of moniters.

I'd be going to Auckland (Takapuna section), by the way, in case anyone lives in Auckland and has any interesting information etc.

Can't answer about the power supply, that shouldn't be a problem. Assuming you are talking about a laptop you now are required to carry it on rather than check it, I believe. It has to be in it's own case when you go through security so they can have a look at it. Lately they haven't been asking me to turn mine on though.

And if you mean a desktop, it's fine to pack it in a box like the original shipping container. Be prepared to open it at the counter, tho.

Technically, changing the power supply in your computer should work, but you might want to check the luggage weight limitations - could end up costing you more to get it there than a new computer! Not to mention the risks associated with airline baggage handlers.

You might be better off contemplating a laptop (I'm sure they would be *way* cheaper in the US than NZ).

When I moved from Australia to the UK I moved everything I owned (including my studio) by ship (about half a container worth). It wasn't too expensive, but the insurance actually cost more than the shipping.

I have a nice desktop and a less-nice laptop. It sounds like I should leave the desktop here, and just carry my laptop with me on the plane.

Thanks for the reminder about luggage handlers. I don't think I would trust my desktop computer to survive without mishap.

My wife is a baggage handler for United and Aloha. If packed properly, your computer would be a very low risk--but you're right, it'd still be a nail-biter!
