The key "might" be to bind the manufacturers to offer multiple licensing-options to their products (e.g. iLok OR eLicenser for Cubase).

AFAIK the only company that offers plugins/synths with both iLok and eLicenser are Xils Lab (+ simple serial numbers for some of their products).

I had massive hassles trying to remove a license when the company stopped using it (hours of research and support tickets).

Having multiple licenses on the same dongle means you can't just sell one of the plugins without getting a new dongle and transferring which means more cost and hassle, possibly considerable hassle.

If you demo a plugin the demo license can't be uninstalled from the dongle which means you can't really sell whatever license is on the dongle where the defunct demo licenses are as that would be rude to the new owner. This means getting a new dongle just for demos or transferring the existing licenses to a new dongle which is more cost and hassle.

That's not true. I demoed Waldorf Largo and PPG Wave on my eLicenser and was able to delete them after their demo periods expired. I think a little trashcan icon shows up next to demo licenses asking if you would like to delete them. All I know is my dongle is demo-free.

If it's a full plugin (non-demo), then you can't just delete them of course, only move them.

By the way, just tried to open eLicenser control panel to see, but got an error message that it has failed to start because application configuration is incorrect..

I rest my case. eLicense is just a load of hassle..

Next operating system upgrade or reinstall will be the end of the eLicenser, no matter how much I like Largo.

As I just mentioned in another thread, eLicencer is absolutely tolerable, at least in my experience. I've had lots of problems with iLok (all of them solved, though, even though I should mention that both my iLoks are unstable and therefore I wouldn't depend on them for live use), but no problems ever with eLicencer. It's been absolutely perfect for me.

Just a little addition to my user experience with eLicenser: Got my USB-eLicenser today, and transferred my licenses to it. Absolutely no problem, just some easy drag & drop stuff, and the USB-Licenser itself is Plug & Play.

Actually, there IS such software, at least from one developer. It's Wallander Instruments. When I purchased Wallander Wivi Band, I got the email which said:

"All files have been digitally watermarked and personally registered to you. Anyone with access to these files will also have access to, and display, your personal information."

Frankly speaking, this was slightly an unpleasant surprise -- I didn't realize this software uses such method of copy protection, when I was making the purchase. But the software itself is brilliant. And I hope it won't be trying to update my credit card info and asking for symbolic payments.

Yeah, Camel Audio uses this style of copy protection for Alchemy. It was kind of startling the first time I saw my information flashing across the plugin window.

The only thing I didn't like was that it also flashed old video footage of stuff I did in the bathroom when I was a child. Not cool. Anyway, elicenser is great for the fact that you can use your software on as many computers as you want and never have to beg for a new authorization when you reinstall. Would I rather a serial? Yeah. But if I can't have one I'd rather elicenser than challenge response any day!

What worries me about eLicenser, is that it would stop working someday, electronics sometimes do that. I often connect/unconnect my eLicenser as I work in different locations, and if it dies one day, that would be a nightmare because almost all my work relies on it... I'm not really sure what to do in this situation, searched Steinberg site a little, but didn't found anything useful. Losing the eLicenser physically is even worse scenario. I read somewhere that in this case you must purchase new licenses instead of those on the lost eLicenser, but again I'm not sure, and Steinberg's site wasn't particularly helpful on the subject.

Is elicenser tolerable?
