Certainly take a look at the list from Bedroom Producers Blog linked to earlier in the thread.

There are quite a lot of all sorts of quality VSTs for free.
I recommend Synth1, FreeAlpha, Oxe, SQ8L, TAL NoiseMaker, Drumatic3, ErsDrums.
I think it's worth buying a copy of Computer Music magazine if only for Dune CM, Zebra CM and Dominator (like some of the other plugs I recommend it may be getting a bit old but, again like the ones I recommended, it sounds great).
