Hi guys,
Just a quick question. I produce house music and I keep any finished projects private while contacting labels because I am unsure if a short preview on soundcloud prior to release is a deterent for some lablels.
Im just wondering what you guys do? Make a preview of the track public and share it or keep it offline until you get a release?
Any input much appreciated!

Personally I hate all these 30-second-preview snippets. Either a song is finished, then I want to listen to the whole song, or it isn't finished, then I'm waiting till it's finished.
A preview is too short to like a song. It's like a photo of a girl where you can only see her feet because the rest isn't finished yet...

I think 30 seconds high quality previews are the best solution. I buy a song only if I can listen to the whole song. If I listen to the whole song several times, then I can learn to like it. It's the same with girls. I don't meet a girl who gives me a photo of her feet only.

From a buyer's perspective, I can't talk about house but for prog rock, most of my recent purchases have been on BandCamp and elsewhere because people have released full albums for free at 128kpbs via progstreaming.com. So getting to hear the material before purchase has certainly earned people money they'd not otherwise have seen -- I'd never heard of most of the artists before. I'm usually hooked by a single track off the album, too - picked at random by foobar2000. If I'm having doubts I listen to the whole album -- though I can't remember that having put me off yet!

I wouldn't mind meeting a girl who photographs her feet.
Though I have a thing for ankles more.
Anyway, Vass , my advice would be to contact a few of your favourite labels in advance to find out what they prefer. It's highly possible that different labels like different things. Also, it will give you a chance to strike up an early relationship with any labels, and they are more likely to look out for your preview / track when you do send it across.

When I uploaded short clips, no one listened to them. When I uploaded full tracks, I got some attention from fans, but the truth is that labels won't like it. So I ended up with posting long clips of full tracks and that gets me lots of plays, at least.
But of course it's always like one label will tell you opposite than the other. You can't share your tracks, but need to be popular. You can't share full mixes, but label wants it full. Or a 3-minute clip. Or upload it on their own form. Or send them it by email. Or send them wav. Or deliver full and mastered product. Or unmastered so they could do this on their own.
There are only two beings that can satisfy everyone: the God and a bitch. I'm not quite a god yet, but definitelly won't try to become a bitch.
